Hopworks Urban Brewery Portland's first eco-pub is now sending bottles to Washington, and you can get them at 99 Bottles. Are you afraid that "organic" means bland and sub-par? This is far from true at the Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB). Christian Ettinger, brewmaster, worked alongside his dad, Roy Ettinger, to co-design and turn a 1948 diesel fuel depot and Caterpillar Tractor showroom into a sustainable brewery and restaurant where reduce, reuse and recycle was truly a focus. The old-growth Douglas Fir posts of the original building take on new life in the pub as booths, bar and other furnishings. Pesticide-free and fertilizer-free ingredients are part of every one of the HUB's organic beers. They also recycle heat from the restaurant's pizza oven to heat the pub's water.
Organic Crosstown Pale Ale bridges east and west with a lane dedicated to riders who aren't afraid to get dirty. Three kinds of organic caramel malts and a 24-pound whirlpool hop bomb keep things interesting while the wheels go round and round. 5.3% ABV · 45 IBU Organic Hopworks IPA is a Northwest classic, with generous additions of Amarillo, Centennial, and Cascade hops in the kettle, hop-back, and dry-hop. This judicious use of the "brewers spice" creates rich and resinous flavors of citrus fruit and pine. The finest organic Canadian pilsner malt and organic Munich and Caramel malts bring balance to your new favorite IPA. Gold Medal 2008 World Beer Cup. Bronze Medal 2008 Great American Beer Festival. 6.6% ABV · 75 IBU
DOA - Deluxe Organic Ale is "strong like bull, but sweet like your momma." This unique beer is a trifecta of bold flavors. Hops, malt and alcohol bully the taste buds on the organic playground while the monitor blows the whistle! 6.9% ABV · 55 IBU

Epic Ales Pushing the Boundaries of Beer Cody Morris and his new Seattle brewery, Epic Ales, were featured in the January/February issue of Mutineer magazine. What intrigued me most was Cody's take on beer -- that beer has limitless possibilities and is only bound by the brewer's imagination. This is why we see ingredients such as szechuan peppercorns, shitake mushrooms, green tea, chamomile and cinnamon as commonplace on his beer labels. While Epic Ales can be drank alone, each has an ideal food pairing that is called out on the brewery's website. The Solar Trans-Amplifier is a twist on the Belgian classic witbier, with major changes being from wheat and oats to rice, and from coriander and bitter orange peel to ginger and chamomile. This beer pairs great with fish and salads. New to 99 Bottles are Epic Ales's Beatrice and Lyli. Lyli is based on green tea. Like wine, teas contribute a tannic undertone and green tea adds nutty, roasty, brothy flavors that pair well with chicken and vegetables. Cody mentioned goat cheese as a pairing option for Lyli, which I liked once I added a few sundried tomatoes to the mix. Beatrice is a sensory experience, bringing together Szechuan peppercorns and cinnamon to create a Cajun delight of a beer, reminiscent of jumbalaya spices. Pair this beer with some Louisiana-style barbeque shrimp, dirty rice, and crawdads. |

Return of The Wee Heavy Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale is at 99 Bottles
2009 was the first year we saw Great Divide's Claymore Scotch Ale, and its short spring release was just that -- way too short! Back then, we fell in love with this malty, deep ruby-hued ale, with its generous amount of caramel sweetness balanced on a reserved hop profile with warming alcohol at 7.7%. And I'm happy to say that Claymore Scotch Ale has returned -- and it tastes just as good as I remember. Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch Ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland.
Give Claymore Scotch Ale a try if you like these beers: McEwans (no longer exported), Silver City Fat, and Belhaven Wee Heavy |

My Favorite Black Water is Beer Southern Tier's Blackwater Series of stouts is back The Blackwater Series have are a lot more than water blackened with dark, roasty malts. These are serious imperial stouts, with alcohol by volume ranges of up to 11%. To me, this series is like comparing the coffee you get from a roadside stand to the rich, robust, full-roast of a Starbucks coffee -- where the Blackwater Series is likened to Starbucks. Returning to 99 Bottles are Mokah, Oat, and Creme Brulee. Mokah is the result of a blend of two acclaimed Blackwater Series imperial stouts: Jahva and Choklat (spring releases). Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah they are an inimitable expression of two of the world's most sought after flavors. Enjoy Mokah stout with -- or as -- your favorite dessert! 11% ABV Oat begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Southern Tier brewers then wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat's thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly. 11% ABV Creme Brulee is brewed with a combination of two-row malt and dark caramel malt, lactose sugar, and a hop mixture of Columbus (kettle) and Horizon (aroma) to create a giant vanilla stout. The aroma is of coffee and creme brulee dessert, the flavor is intensely roasted coffee-like malts with big notes of vanilla. This big beer is truly dessert in a glass. 10% ABV |
