It then finishes with flavors of toasted coconut and hoppy spice to finish the balance. Silver medal herb and spice beer, 2010 US Open Beer Championship. About Maui Brewing Co.: Founder Garrett Marrero and his wife, Melanie, run a 7-barrel brewpub at the Kahana location as well as the 25-barrel full production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina. Maui Brewing Co. is a truly local beer as 100% of their products are made in Hawaii as opposed to other "Hawaiian" beers. With a strong commitment to the local economy, and deep concern for the environment, MBC microbrews are packaged with the most eco-friendly materials. Although cans and bottles are both recyclable, bottles still break and may pose a risk at beaches. Cans have the added bonus of protecting the beer in the best possible manner -- from both light and oxygen damage which can seriously compromise the taste. The spent grain from beer production is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting; and any cans damaged in production are donated to the Maui Humane Society. MBC also preserves a piece of Hawaii's canning history, using equipment obtained from Maui Land & Pineapple. ...so you don't drink beer stored in cans? Do you drink draught beer? Yes. I thought so. Did you know that drinking beer served from kegs is essentially drinking beer stored in a GIANT can?! So get a can of MBC beer, pour it into a glass, and enjoy. Not yet convinced to get canned beer? Well, that leaves more for me! ;-) Mmmmm.....Maui goodness. |

 | Back in Black.... taking the pale out of India ales
|
 | |
21st Amendment recently joined in the revolution of taking the "pale" out of the India pale ale. They say, "Inspired by Paul Revere's midnight ride, we rebelled against the British
style IPA, embraced the more aggressive American version and then recast it in
bold, brave, defiant black. Our Black IPA is a Declaration of Independence from
the tyranny of the expected." This is their newest year-round beer
available in six packs or single cans, which is available now at 99 Bottles. It's brewed like an American IPA but
with the addition of rich, dark malts, giving this beer the luxurious dark flavors of roasty coffee, dark chocolate-covered-caramel and burnt brown sugars contrasted with piney, herbal hops that increasingly come to the forefront as the beer warms. 6.8% ABV, 65 IBU These black IPA recipes are emerging as a new style of beer called " Cascadian Dark Ale" (CDA).
