Yom Kippur The Day of Atonement
After coming through the New Year, Rosh Hashana and the 10 days of Awe, which is preparation for Yom Kippur. It is always 10 days after Rosh Hashana or on the 10th of Tishrei. Yom Kippur is a "solemn Sabbath" where you afflict your soul (fast). It is the only feast that is a fast.
Lev 23:26 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 27 "Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement . It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. 28 And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement , to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. 29 For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your Sabbath." NKJV
Lev 16:29 "This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. 30 For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. 31 It is a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever. NKJV
I. BACKGROUND OF YOM KIPPUR
A. The first Passover was when the children of Israel came out of Egypt and they applied the blood of the lamb to the doorposts so that the death angel would pass over them. B. The first Pentecost was 50 days later when the children of Israel had gone to Mt. Sinai and Moses had gone up the mountain and received the Torah. When he and Joshua came down they found the children of Israel dancing around the golden calf and Moses broke the stone Torah. C. On the first day of Elul Moses went back up the mountain to atone for the sins of the children of Israel.
Ex 32:30 Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, "You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." 31 Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! 32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin - but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written." 33 And the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. 34 Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin." 35 So the LORD plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aaron made.
D. Moses came down the mountain after his second 40 days with the Torah and the plans for the Tabernacle, the Feasts of the Lord and with the Lord having extended atonement for them. It is during this 40 days which starts on the first of Elul and ends with the Day of Atonement. It is during this time that the children of Israel were fearful and repenting because they did not know if God would grant atonement to them until Moses came down. That is why today the month of Elul is a season of repentance.
E. This was the 10th day of Tishrei which was the first day that they celebrated the Day of Atonement. Ex. 34 It was also at this time that the "veil" was put over Moses' face because of it shinning and to cover not only the shinning but the fading away.
F. The issue of glory is connected to the Day of Atonement
2 Co 3:7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious. 12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech - 13 unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. NKJV
G. The Day of Atonement is also called "Face to Face" which is a Hebrew idiom because it is the only time the high priest could go into the Holy of Holies and it was the time that Moses came down and had spoken to God face to face.
H. The veil represents understanding the eternal plans of God and beholding His glory. The Jews are veiled to understanding the eternal purposes of the Church and the first coming of Christ until they get saved and then the veil is taken away. It will also be taken off them in the last days. The church is also veiled to understanding the Jewish people and the nation of Israel and God's eternal purposes with them.
Isa 25:7 And He will destroy on this mountain the surface of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations. 8 He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces; the rebuke of His people He will take away from all the earth; for the LORD has spoken. NKJV
I. After the Day of Atonement when Moses told them all that the Lord had said they brought together their gold, silver, silk etc. for the building of the Tabernacle for 5 days. From Tishrei 10 to Tishrei 15 and on the 15 of Tishrei they began to build the tabernacle of Moses. This is the first Feast of Tabernacles. Exodus 35 and 36
II. THE BLOOD
A. Our sins are blotted out by the blood Micah 7:19
B. Ten things the blood does token of new covenant gives eternal life makes atonement brings redemption justifies us before God gives us forgiveness provides reconciliation provides for us cleansing enables us to be over comers we are purchased with the blood
C. The blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin only cover it. Heb 10:1-6
Heb 10:1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. 5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. 7 Then I said, 'Behold, I have come - In the volume of the book it is written of Me - To do Your will, O God.'" 8 Previously saying, "Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them" (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
III. INDIVIDUAL REDEMPTION AND NATIONAL REDEMPTION
A. Passover and the spring feasts speak of individual redemption or personal redemption B. The fall feasts speak of national redemption C. Yom Kippur is strictly a national Jewish event. It is not a the gentile event. It is where we will see the Lord battle for Jerusalem (battle of Armageddon). After the 7th trumpet blows (Rev. 10:7; 11:15-19) which will be during the Feast of Trumpets, the harpazo (snatching away) happens and we are with the Lord as He fights the battle for Jerusalem and comes to the Mt. of Olives and splits it and then goes into Jerusalem defeats the anti Christ and cleanses the temple. The people in Jerusalem will be crying out "Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord and this will happen on Yom Kippur. The veil is lifted off of national Israel and they are all saved. (Rom 11) The veil is also lifted from the church and the nations and the mystery of God is finished. We will have 10 days from the Feast of Trumpets to Yom Kippur where the 7 bowls of wrath are poured out globally and the Lord vanquishes every king, nation, government and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father.
IV. THE DAY OF ATONEMENT Lev. 16
Lev 16:17 There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel. 18 And he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around.NKJV
A. First atonement-Aaron makes atonement for himself B. Second atonement-Aaron's household C. Third atonement-two goats one for the Lord and one scapegoat-these are atonement for the people D. Fourth atonement-for the Holy place E. Fifth atonement-for the holy alter
V. TALMUD
According to the Talmud and Josephus they priests would tie a red sash to the scapegoat to keep it identified and another one to the temple door. Then they would take it out to the wilderness about 10 miles and throw it over the cliff backward so it would die. During the time of Christ the red sash would turn white which was a prophetic sign that their sins were forgiven.
Isa 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow ; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. NKJV
The Talmud records for 40 years prior to the destruction in 70 AD that the lot for the goat came up in the left hand which was a sign of bad things for Israel. The red sash quit turning white on Yom Kippur. The western light on the menorah would never stay light. The temple doors would keep opening up by themselves and they were so heavy that it took 20 priests to open the doors. The priests at the time interpreted this to mean destruction was coming from Zec 11:1
Open your doors, O Lebanon, that fire may devour your cedars. NKJV
What happened 40 years before the destruction of the temple? Jesus was crucified in 30 AD.
