DAYS OF NOAH AND THE DAYS OF LOT
REVIEW OF PART 1 AND 2
PART 1
In Part 1 we looked at the summer season that we are in based on the parable of the Fig tree. This parable occurs 3 times in the Gospels. Of the 39 parables that Jesus taught there are only 7 that appear in each of the three gospels: Matthew, Mark and Luke. (John contains no parables) This parable is in all three and it is the only parable that Jesus commands us to LEARN!
Mt 24:32 "Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near - at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. NKJV
Mk 13:28 "Now learn this parable from the fig tree : When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near - at the doors! 30 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. NKJV
Lk 21:29 Then He spoke to them a parable: "Look at the fig tree , and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. NKJV
It is a simple parable. A parable is a story that illustrates one main truth. 1. We are to learn this parable. 2. It is about the fig tree and Luke says all the trees. 3. When you see it began to put forth leaves you know something. 4. You know summer is near. Two points about the fig tree. 1. It is one of the first trees to bud in Israel and 2. it represents Israel. The conclusion of the parable is that you know summer is near. Summer is a season. When you watch Israel and you see all these things you know that the coming of the Lord is near. When He says "you see all these things"; He is referring to all the end time things that precede this passage happening simultaneously with Israel back in the Land and Jerusalem as its capital--you know that the kingdom of God is near and Jesus is going to return. He concludes with 3 points about passing away: 1. the generation that witnesses this will not pass away and still be on the Earth when He returns, 2. the Word of God will not pass away and 3. heaven and earth will pass away. Think of this--He uses the eternal Words that He speaks as the plumb line and it WILL NEVER PASS AWAY, The generation that is here when Israel and Jerusalem are restored WILL NOT PASS AWAY until everything is fulfilled and heaven and Earth WILL PASS AWAY. In the world today most people think that heaven and earth will never pass away, the word of God is irrelevant and will pass away and Jesus will not return until after they pass away. Most people and many Christians think the opposite of what the Lord said. These verses tell us that we CAN KNOW THE SEASON! This season (kairos) is measured by a generation. 40 is the beginning and transition of a generation and 70 is the full extent of the generation. 1967 when Jerusalem came back under Israeli control for the first time in almost 2,300 years started the clock ticking. 1967 + 40 = 2007. (June 6 to be exact) 1967 + 70 = 2037. We have the "summer" season framed in from 2007 to 2037. Somewhere in this frame the Lord will return.
PART 2
In part 2 I gave 15 "signs of the summer season".
I. SIGNS OF THE SEASON OF THE LORD'S RETURN
A. We find 7 signs in Matthew:
1. false christs vs. 5 2. wars and rumors of wars vs. 6 3. ethnic conflicts--racial tensions and religious tensions vs. 7 4. famines vs. 7 5. pestilences vs. 7 6. earthquakes vs. 7 7. beginning of sorrows (birth pangs) vs. 5-8 The idea is that they will increase in frequency and intensity.
B. In Luke we see 8 more signs:
1. commotions Greek NT:181 akatastasia, instability, disorder: KJV - commotion, confusion, tumult. (this is really happening globally right now the results of this is terror!) Luke 21:9 2. fearful sights-- NT:5400 phobotron, exceedingly afraid because of what you perceive, have great terror 3. great signs from heaven--signs and wonders in the sky--sun, moon, stars, meteors, comets, ufo's etc. 4. great distress in the land --NT:318 anagke; from NT:303 and the base of NT:43; constraint (literally or figuratively); by implication, distress: KJV - distress, must needs, (of) necessity (-sary), needeth, needful. The word for great is megas and the base word of anagke is agkale which means "ache". We could say that this is "mega stress or mega need or mega ache" all over the earth. 5. distress of nations--NT:4928 sunoche; restraint, i.e. (figuratively) anxiety: KJV - anguish, distress. 6. perplexity--NT:640 aporia (ap-or-ee'-a); from the same as NT:639; a (state of) quandry: KJV - perplexity. NT:639 aporeo (ap-or-eh'-o); from a compound of NT; to have no way out, i.e. be at a loss (mentally): KJV - (stand in) doubt, be perplexed. (This will be the increasing conditions of the nations and humanity in general.) 7. waves roaring--confusing seas as a result of underwater earthquakes, tsunamis, epic storms, hurricanes etc. 8. men's hearts will fail them--increase of heart attacks due to stress etc. vs.. 26
PART 3
The Lord goes on to say that it will be like or as the days of Noah and the days of Lot.
Lk 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: NKJV
Lk 17:28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot NKJV
Mt 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. NKJV
I want to go into more depth on Noah and Lot because they are the only 2 Old Testament saints that the Lord Jesus himself used as a reference and a comparison to for us in these days.
C. The Days of Noah and Lot
He goes on to say as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of man be. We can be like Noah or everyone else. The warning is that many people will be so busy eating, drinking, marrying and getting engaged that they will be oblivious to the times and season as the people in Noah's time were. They did not know until the flood came and took them all away. The flood is judgment and the ones taken away are the wicked. Noah knew the day that he entered the ark. Noah probably did not know the rain would start 7 days after he entered the ark. In Genesis 7-8 we have very specific days mentioned regarding Noah, when he entered the ark, the rain, the flood, the recession of water, the drying of the Earth and the day that Noah came out of the ark. Noah and Lot are the only O.T. patriarchs mentioned by Jesus that He specifically mentioned His coming would be "as the days of Noah" and "as the days of Lot". We have much to learn from Noah regarding this but suffice it to say that Jesus Himself tells us we will NOT know the DAY OR HOUR (instant) and to WATCH because you do not know the HOUR that the Lord is coming. vs.. 42. He says again in vs.. 43 that if the master of the house had known the watch (hour) the thief would come that he would WATCH. vs.. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour (instant) you do not expect.
Lk 17:20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, "The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say,'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you." 22 Then He said to the disciples, "The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, 'Look here!' or 'Look there!' Do not go after them or follow them. 24 For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 "In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left." 37 And they answered and said to Him, "Where, Lord?" So He said to them, "Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together." NKJV
The days of Lot are described as eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting and building.
When Jesus brings up Noah and Lot He does not focus on all the sin that was going on during those time periods. He does not focus on the violence of the time of Noah.
Ge 6:5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually . 12 God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them He does not focus on the horrible immorality or homosexuality of Sodom. Ezekiel tells us that it was pride, haughtiness, fullness of food, abundance of idleness, (too much free time), forsaking the poor and needy and committing abominations.
Eze 16:49 Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom : She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit. NKJV
C. The lesson from Jesus concerning the days of Noah and Lot
The point that Jesus makes clearly with using the days of Noah and the days of Lot is specifically their indifference towards Him, lack of watchfulness, and not knowing the times and seasons therefore they are caught off guard and one is taken and one is left. In both cases the wicked people that are eating, drinking, marrying, working, buying, selling, building and planting are taken away. Noah and Lot are left on the Earth and delivered out of and through the judgment of God. It is the preoccupation with their day to day life with no consideration of God or His purposes for them that is the focus and warning of the Lord to the final generation that will be on the Earth at the time of His return. Self is on the throne of the heart and not the Lord Jesus Christ. When self is on the throne you end up with the violence of the time of Noah and the gross immorality of the time of Lot. It is the fruit and not the root of a generation that rejects intimacy with God and rejects knowing the season of His Kingdom coming.
D. Divine warnings
1. Noah and Lot delivered out of and through the judgment
Both Noah and Lot were warned concerning the judgments that were coming. Noah was divinely warned because he had found grace in the sight of God. Lot was divinely warned by angels because Abraham was standing in the gap and praying for him.
Ge 6:7 So the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord NKJV
Ge 6:13 And God said to Noah ,"The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. NKJV
SIDENOTE: The word for pitch is OT:3724 kopher (ko'-fer); properly, a cover, i.e. (literally) a village (as covered in); (specifically) bitumen (as used for coating), and the henna plant (as used for dyeing); figuratively, a redemption-price: KJV - bribe, camphire, pitch, ransom, satisfaction, sum of money, village. It is the same root word used for the mercy seat that "covered" the ark. It is also the root word used for propitiation and atonement. Thus Yom Kippur-the day of atonement. The ark was covered with pitch or atonement or ransom or redemption. It was the atonement that floated the ark through the judgments of God. It will be the atonement of Jesus Christ that will float the church through the coming judgments of God as well! It is also connected with covering as in the yamika or kippa that many Jews wear on their heads as a sign of the Lord covering them. It is the true teaching of covering that because of the atonement of Jesus Christ in our life we are covered! We are covered by the Lord Himself because of His blood.
Ge 18:16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. 17 And the Lord said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him." 20 And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." 22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 And Abraham came near and said, "Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" 26 So the Lord said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes." 27 Then Abraham answered and said, "Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?" So He said, "If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it." 29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, "Suppose there should be forty found there?" So He said, "I will not do it for the sake of forty." 30 Then he said, "Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?" So He said, "I will not do it if I find thirty there." 31 And he said, "Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?" So He said, "I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty." 32 Then he said, "Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it for the sake of ten." 33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. NKJV
Ge 19:12 Then the men said to Lot , "Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city - take them out of this place! 13 For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it." 14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, "Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!" But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking. 15 When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city." 16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed." 18 Then Lot said to them, "Please, no, my lords! 19 Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. 20 See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live." 21 And he said to him, "See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. 22 Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there. "Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 27 And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace. 29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt. NKJV
Because God is loving and merciful and His mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13); it is His desire that all of mankind would be spared the judgments that are coming and especially the final judgment the lake of fire, the second death. In His infinite love and mercy He gives us warning.
2. Divine warnings through Scripture
The most authoritative warning that we have is the Word of God. He has given us warning through the mouth of Jesus Christ himself in Matt 24 and Luke 21 and other verses. He has given it to us through John the revelator in the Book of The Revelation. Through Daniel the prophet. Through the apostle Paul, Peter, Jude, James and through many other Old Testament prophets.
3. Divine warnings through many ways and means:
He also gives us warnings through nature, the earth, the heavens and all of creation that is groaning. He gives us warnings through the social upheavals, through economic systems and false religious systems. He will also warn us through angelic messengers, through dreams, through circumstances of our life, and through other people.
There is an expectation that the Lord has upon the people on the Earth and that is that they would have some level of awareness and response as to the times and seasons! It is interesting that the majority of the people around the world are anticipating that we are at the end and that there is some cataclysmic event or events that will happen. Islam teaches that, Christianity teaches it, Judaism teaches it, Hinduism and Buddhism teach it, and even in Paganism it is seen. There is this general awareness that people have now that something is going to happen. It is reflected in music, movies and religion.
4. The response to Divine warnings is critical!
· How one responds to this becomes the critical issue! The fear of the Lord in Noah's life caused him to be ready. Heb 11:7 By faith Noah , being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. NKJV
· The condition of your conscience is critical as well! 1 Pe 3:20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah , while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us - baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him. NKJV
· The Lord knows how to deliver people out of judgment and deliver them into judgment. 2 Pe 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah , one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; 6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; 7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked 8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds) - 9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, 11 whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord. NKJV
· The intercession that is made for you by others and through you for others is absolutely critical as it was with Lot. Gen. 18:19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him." 20 And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." 22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
· The response to that intercession and to Divine warning is critical, consider the response of Lot's wife and son in laws. The end times is no joke! Gen 19:14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, "Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!" But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking. 16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed." 26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
Lk 17:31 "In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife . 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. NKJV
· The response has to be a response that we are looking forward to our future and not looking back to our past. It is not a time to have soul ties to the season that we are in but be longing for the age that is coming. This is not the end of the world but the end of an age and the beginning of the glorious Kingdom age! Tit 2:11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. NKJV
2 Pe 3:11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. NKJV
2 Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. NKJV
Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. NKJV
Heb 11:9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. NKJV
I want to encourage each of you to consider 7 things to pray for:
1. Pray to have the fear of the Lord like Noah. 2. Pray to have a good conscience towards God. 3. Pray that you will trust the Lord to deliver you out of and through the judgments that are going to sweep through the Earth. 4. Pray for your family, friends and others to be delivered out of the judgments that are coming by being saved and in Christ. 5. Pray that you do not think that these things are a joke like Lot's sons in laws. 6. Pray that you will be looking for the next kingdom age and that any soul ties to this age are broken. 7. Pray that you will have zeal for this season. Titus 2:14
It is time to be zealous!
Rv 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. NKJV
If you would see souls converted, if you would hear the cry that "the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord"; if you would place crowns upon the head of the Savior, and His throne lifted high, then be filled with zeal. For, under God, the way of the world's conversion must be by the zeal of the church. Every grace shall do exploits, but this shall be first; prudence, knowledge, patience, and courage will follow in their places, but zeal must lead the van. It is not the extent of your knowledge, though that is useful; it is not the extent of your talent, though that is not to be despised; it is your zeal that shall do great exploits. This zeal is the fruit of the Holy Spirit: it draws its vital force from the continued operations of the Holy Ghost in the soul. If our inner life dwindles, if our heart beats slowly before God, we shall not know zeal; but if all be strong and vigorous within, then we cannot but feel a loving anxiety to see the kingdom of Christ come, and His will done on earth, even as it is in heaven. A deep sense of gratitude will nourish Christian zeal. Looking to the hole of the pit whence we were digged, we find abundant reason why we should spend and be spent for God. And zeal is also stimulated by the thought of the eternal future. It looks with tearful eyes down to the flames of hell, and it cannot slumber: it looks up with anxious gaze to the glories of heaven, and it cannot but bestir itself. It feels that time is short compared with the work to be done, and therefore it devotes all that it has to the cause of its Lord. And it is ever strengthened by the remembrance of Christ's example. He was clothed with zeal as with a cloak. How swift the chariot-wheels of duty went with Him! He knew no loitering by the way. Let us prove that we are His disciples by manifesting the same spirit of zeal.
