Last Days to Vote for Make Believe

If you haven't voted yet for your favorite Make Believe art installation, now is the time! There are only 21 days left to vote. The competition for Chicago's largest art prize is intense, only a handful of votes separate the #1 installation from the pack. Construction work to begin on Damen Ave

The City Water Department is expected to begin a major reconstruction of a rapidly deteriorating water main on Damen Avenue from Armitage to Churchill this fall. There will be delays and temporary closures of Damen so please consider alternative routes to get to work or school. Please be considerate of neighbors while using side streets. Details of the construction process will be available from the Water Department Project Manager at (312) 742-3611, feel free to call with questions.

Chicago Guitar Festival

The 2010 Guitar Festival presents Paul Galbraith, an internationally renowned artist and innovator of the classical guitar. Galbraith will perform critically acclaimed recordings of works by Bach, Haydn and Brahms, along with his own arrangements of folk tunes from various countries on Friday October 8 at 8pm at the Wicker Park Art Center (2215 North Ave). Bucktown Apple Pie Contest

The annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest will be coming to Holstein Park (2200 N. Oakley) on Sunday October 10 from 2-5pm.This year's fest will include a number of non-apple based attractions, including a square dance! See: http://www.bucktownapplepiecontest.com.


Wicker Park Farmer's Market

Visit the Wicker Park Farmer's Market on Sunday, from 8am-2pm. The great local veggies and flowers will be available every Sunday through October 24. Come on out to the Park (1425 N. Damen) and check it out. Free!

More Shred-A-Thon

Save the date for Alderman Moreno's Shred-A-Thon on October 12 from at the 1st Ward office, located at 2058 N. Western Avenue. The 1st Ward Alderman invites you to shred and recycle your old and sensitive papers that have been piling up. The shredding truck will be located in front of the 1st Ward Office from 5-8pm. Come on out with all of your recyclables!

 

Guided Tree Walk

Come join the Bucktown Community Organization (BCO) Sponsored Fall Guided Tree Walk on Sunday October 17 at 3:30pm. Led by local naturalist, tree keeper and BCO member Janet Mrwoka, you can discover nature in your very own front yard or city parkway! Join the walk at the NE corner of Bloomingdale and Wolcott (in front of 1801 N. Wolcott), the guided walk will continue until 5pm. This free event is open to all. Haunted Indoor Drive-In Movie

Please join the Chicago Park District October 21-24 for an outdoor movie series at Wicker Park (1425 W. Damen). All movies cost $2.00 for those 6 years & over. Kids 5 & under and seniors get in free! Movie Schedule is as follows: Men in Black 10/21 & 10/23 at 6:30pm; It Came from Outer Space 10/23 & 10/24 at 2pm; Men in Black II 10/22 & 10/24 at 6:30pm. Lecture: Landscape Designs for Historic Homes

WPB First Fridays at the Flat Iron

The Flat Iron Artists Association presents WPB First Fridays!  On the First Friday of each month the Wicker Park/Bucktown area will come alive with a unique celebration of the arts.  It's a neighborhood pARTy and everyone is invited!  Start your evening at the historic Flat Iron Arts Building where you can explore two floors of art displayed in artists' studios and living spaces. Of course, the surrounding neighborhood is expecting you, so feel free to venture forth on your own and enjoy the boundless shopping, dining and nightlife opportunities our vibrant community has to offer. The next WPB First Friday will take place November 5 at the Flat Iron Building, 1579 N. Milwaukee from 6-10pm. Admission is always free, but donations are gratefully accepted. WPB Shredding & Recycling Day

The last FREE Wicker Park and Bucktown Shredding and Recycling Day of 2010 will be held Saturday, November 13 from 10am-Noon in the parking lot in front of Jewel, Kmart, and Staples on Ashland Avenue, just north of Division. See you there!

 

Wicker Park Fountain Decorating Social

Join the Wicker Park committee on Sunday, November 21 from 10am-4pm at Wicker Park (1425 N. Damen) for a day of decorating the fountain and urns with lights, greens, and dried flowers and grasses from the Wicker Park gardens. All Ages Welcome! 


CAPS Meetings
Residents in the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods that are concerned about crime should plan to attend an upcoming CAPS meeting.  Wicker Park and Bucktown are located within the 13th and 14th Districts, and there are eight beats that cover the neighborhood. Below is the list of all eight beats and the date and location of each CAPS meeting.  All meetings are from 7-8pm unless otherwise noted:
Beat 1312 meets on the second Tuesday of every month at St Helen's Church, 2301 W. Augusta in the basement.
Beat 1322 meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the 13th District, 937 N. Wood.
Beat 1323 meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the Northwest Settlement House, 1012 N. Noble, 2nd Floor.
Beat 1424 meets the second Wednesday of every month at the Wicker Park Fieldhouse, 1425 N. Damen.
Beat 1431 meets the first Thursday of every odd-numbered month at the 14th District, 2150 N.  California.
Beat 1432 meets the third Thursday of every month at Holstein Park, 2200 N. Oakley.
Beat 1433 meets the second Tuesday of every month, 6:30pm, at St. Mary's Church (in the basement), 1850 N. Hemirtage.
Beat 1434 meets the second Monday of every month, 6:30pm, at the Bucktown Wicker Park Library Branch, 1701 N. Milwaukee.
