Gulf Atlantic Diocese Holds Synod

Bishop Appoints Deacon

FORT MYERS BEACH, FLORIDA- 11/06/2010 - On Saturday, November 6th, the Gulf Atlantic Diocese held its first Synod at the Advent Retreat Center near Live Oak, Florida.  St. Raphael's by the Sea on Fort Myers Beach was one of three new parishes officially recieved into the Gulf Atlantic Diocese. Besides St. Raphael's by the Sea, the other new parishes are Christ Church Anglican on Vero Beach and All Souls Anglican in Jacksonville.  At the beginning of the session, the Synod voted to recieve the new parishes giving them seat, voice and vote.  Seated with the St. Raphael's by the Sea delegation was the Reverend Susan Tweardy Rhodes, Deacon, and her husband David. The Reverend Alice Marcrum, Rector of St. Raphael's by the Sea and Rev. Rhodes met at a healing conference over five years ago in Osprey, FL. They were delighted to learn of Bishop Neil Lebhar's decision to appoint Deacon Rhodes of Lake Placid, Florida to St. Raphael's by the Sea.

DelegationAt the end of the session, the Synod officially welcomed all three new parishes as they processed in to a standing ovation while singing 'In Christ Alone'.   Deacon Rhodes and her husband, David, processed in with the St. Raphael's by the Sea Anglican delegation behind the parish's new banner carried by James Marcrum, the rector's husband. The parish's delegates were Roxie Smith, lay delegate, Betty Goodacre, alternate, and the Reverend Alice Marcrum, rector.  The beautiful new banner with the parish's logo was a gift to the parish from A. J. Bassett, Betty Goodacre, and Roxie Smith.  The special welcome was a moving experience filled with the love and joy of Christ.

We are an orthodox Anglican parish in an island resort community. We seek to know God and to make Him known to others.  We exist to glorify and proclaim God as revealed in Jesus Christ. We welcome all who seek Him and his love.

TOGETHER, we glorify and proclaim God through sacrament, word and deed.

Our pastor is The Reverend J. Alice Marcrum.  Her sermons are all posted to the church website as audio and/or text files.  Please log on to enjoy some of the very best sermons you will ever hear!  www.saintraphaelsbythesea.org.
