Work is scheduled to finish in August. |
Conservation Project in Augsburg Finishes
A multi-year project at the Fuggerhouse in Augsburg, Germany, a historic residence of the Fugger banking family, has recently finished. Although the building was damaged in the Second World War, some of the sixteenth-century decorated interiors survived. WMF focused on the Muse Room, one of the most important intact rooms in the palace, undertaking a conservation program for frescoes and other decorative elements. An inauguration ceremony is scheduled for May 15. |
WHSAD Students Tour Ellis Island
Juniors from Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design (WHSAD) toured Ellis Island in late April with the Vice President of Save Ellis Island and conservation architects from Jan Hird Pokorny. The students learned about the history of preservation on the island as well as ongoing restoration efforts. The students visited buildings currently closed to the public, including the Laundry and other former hospital buildings, and the Baggage and Dormitory Building. The visit to Ellis Island was part of WMF's Preservation in Practice program for WHSAD students. |
New Gov't Center Plan Voted Down
On May 3 the Orange County Legislature voted 11-10 in favor of demolishing Paul Rudolph's Orange County Government Center, a 2012 Watch site, but failed to achieve the 14-vote majority needed to approve initial bonding for the project. This defeat is not likely to be the end of a push for a new government center, however, and WMF hopes an alternative to demolition can be found. |
