New Partnership with Madhya Pradesh
WMF has signed an agreement with the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh to support the surveying and conservation of a portfolio of important monuments in several historic towns and cities. Work will begin this spring with initial assessments of several buildings in Orchha, a town of 10,000 in the northern part of the state.
Great News for 2010 Watch Site in Belfast
Work began in mid-February to stabilize Carlisle Memorial Methodist Church in Belfast, a nineteenth-century landmark that was on the 2010 World Monuments Watch. Following Watch-listing, WMF Britain supported the creation of a structural condition report that enabled the Belfast Building Preservation Trust to present a clear case for emergency funding for the building. In early February of this year, the trust secured 400,000 for emergency protection work, a necessary step before a restoration program can begin. The ultimate goal of the project is to convert the church into a center for the surrounding communities.
Crucial Vote on Rudolph's Gov't Center
Paul Rudolph's 1971 Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY, is on the 2012 Watch because of the threat of demolition, as a result of damage from two hurricanes in 2011 and the cumulative effects of deferred maintenance. Many community members are advocating for the renovation of the government center, which would cost only a fraction of the expense of designing and constructing a new building. A crucial vote is scheduled for April 5, when the Orange County Legislature could decide to demolish the structure. If demolished, it would be the second Paul Rudolph building on the World Monuments Watch to be razed, following the sad fate of Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida.
Update on 510 Fifth Avenue
510 Fifth Avenue, formerly the Manufacturers Hanover Trust building, was included on the 2012 Watch because of controversial alterations to the structure, a New York City landmark. Recently, an agreement was reached with the owners of the building to return the screen designed by Harry Bertoia for the interior as well as certain other concessions to improve the connection to the important design elements of architect Gordon Bunshaft's original vision.
