2012 World Monuments Watch Announced

On October 5, at a press conference in New York City, WMF President Bonnie Burnham announced the 2012 World Monuments Watch. The 67 sites from 41 countries and territories range from  prehistoric to brutalist and include gardens, palaces, bridges, and entire neighborhoods. There is already good news to report for one of the 2012 sites, Mind's Eye in the Cayman Islands: one week after the Watch announcement, the government declared it was allocating $500,000 for conservation work on the building.

Hundreds of news articles have appeared around the world since the announcement. Below is a selection of stories that we feel are particularly noteworthy:

Reuters: Around the World, 67 Cultural Sites Deemed at Risk

Agence France-Presse: Foundation Says 67 World Heritage Sites Threatened

The New York Times: World Monuments Fund Places Manufacturers Hanover Building on At-Risk List

The San Francisco Chronicle: Time Running Out for Endangered Sites in Mexico

Curbed NY: 2012 World Monuments Watch: The New York List

The Guardian: Architectural Fashions Change, but Even Brutalist Buildings Should Be Saved

Past Watch Site Project Nears Completion

The Temple of Portunus in Rome's Forum Boarium appeared on the 2006 Watch because it was an advanced state of deterioration. Limited resources meant that the authorities had been able to carry out surveys of the building's condition, but did not have the funds to implement conservation work. Shortly after Watch-listing, WMF partnered with the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma to move forward with a conservation program for the temple. Now, five years later, the project is nearing completion. With the recent publication of a guidebook in English and Italian to the Forum Boarium--which includes the Temple of Portunus as well as the nearby Temple of Hercules--visitors to Rome will soon be able visit this ancient corner of the city and see these two important temples conserved. A video overview of the Temple of Portunus project produced by the Sopritendenza can be seen here.

2011 Hadrian Award Gala: October 27th

WMF will be honoring Ronald and Jo Carole Lauder with this year's Hadrian Award, and Marcela Prez de Cullar with the inaugural Watch Award, at a gala dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza in New York City on October 27. Friends will gather at La Mar Cebichera Peruana for an after party following the gala.
