Transit Systems and NABI team up to 'Stuff the Bus' for Local Charities

The city of Wichita/Wichita Transit, Reno County Area Transit, Hutchinson, Kan., (RCAT) and North American Bus Industries Inc. all worked together with Wichita radio station B98-FM to Stuff the Bus, a joint effort to help Santa provide for families in need this holiday season and throughout the year.

The buses from the two transit systems stopped at 46 different locations in Wichita and Hutchinson, Kan., November 26 through December 1, 2007, collecting gifts donated from local businesses, schools, retail stores and individuals. The gifts that people loaded onto the buses included toys, clothing, non-perishable food and personal hygiene items to benefit the Catholic Charities Harbor House, the YWCA Women's Crisis Center and the Sexual Assault / Domestic Violence Center.

During the four-day period the Stuff the Bus event collected more than 13 busloads of beneficial items for the shelters, an amount valued around $300,000. Another $4,000 in cash donations was also raised. Wichita Transit General Manager Jay Banasiak says, "This is the ninth year Wichita Transit has helped out with this event and it has grown tremendously over the years. That's what it is all about - helping out your local community. It's a fantastic project and all of us at the Wichita Transit are proud to help our Stuff the Bus partners, B-98FM, RACT and North American Bus Industries Inc."

Project ACTION is accepting applications for the upcoming Mobility Planning Institute!!

Project Action's annual Mobility Planning Services Institute (MPS), which convenes teams from communities across the U.S. to work together to develop action plans for improving the accessibility of transportation services in their community. Applications for the 2008 MPS are due Dec. 21, 2007.

About the Institute

The MPS institute offers intensive training and planning activities that result in plans each team can take home to improve services in their communities. The training component of MPS is provided by industry experts serving as faculty for breakout sessions. Interspersed with the learning sessions are hands-on team working sessions. In a relaxed setting, Institute faculty facilitate an interactive learning environment where team members can openly discuss challenging issues and plan solutions.

Each team produces an action plan, with shared responsibilities to carry out throughout the next 12 months, reflecting specific local concerns and stages of development, and presents their plan to the full group teams at the end of three days of intense work.

ESPA provides funding for travel, lodging and meals for MPS participants. MPS teams also receive additional follow-up technical assistance from ESPA staff within the first 12 months at no cost to the community.
