Come Out and Play on the Plateau!
Lakes, Trails, Waterfalls, & HISTORY Gallore! | June 2010 |
Greetings!
A Continuing Legacy |
We recently celebrated Memorial Day which began as a time of reflection following one of the darkest hours of American history - the Civil War and we will soon celebrate Independence Day and we hope there isn't a single US Citizen that doesn't know the reason that we celebrate this occassion. It's a perfect time to stop and reflect on all those that have served our country valiently throughout the years and be grateful to those that still do so today. It isn't an easy way of life and not one for the faint of heart. Most everyone knows at least one everyday hero. Take a moment to thank that person today. It takes a special person to put their life on the line for a friend, not to mention total strangers.
This area is rich in history, far too much to share in one newsletter. We would like to take a moment today to share with you a special "hometown" hero - Sgt. Alvin C. York and a little about how his legacy continues on - plus a special event coming up this Saturday at the Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Site in Pall Mall, TN.
Sgt. York was one of the most highly decorated heroes of WWI due to the capture of a machine gun nest in the French countryside. He was awarded among other awards, the highest decoration available to an American Hero - the Medal of Honor. A modest and humble man, he was never comfortable with all the attention that was showered upon him following that day. As he left his home to go to war, he felt highly unprepared due to the lack of education available to the people and the near isolation of the local communities. He worked hard following his return to make sure future generations of the area's people had better educational opportunities and more. We invite you to read more about Sgt. York, his accomplishments, and all that the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation is endeavoring to do to continue his legacy at www.sgtyork.org. You are also encouraged to visit www.yorkgeneralstore.blogspot.com to learn more about all that is going on at the Sgt. Alvin C. York General Store. Feel free to shop online - it helps support the Foundation's efforts - or make plans to visit the scenic Valley of the Three Forks. It is such a picturesque and peaceful destination. This Saturday, June 19th is the 2nd Annual Cruise In Summer at the store/park. They have a great day of entertainment lined up to accompany the array of automobiles, plus plenty of good food at the store. All suitable for all ages of the family.

The Sgt. York General Store is also the headquarters for the brand new Tennessee Trailblazers' Tour featuring stops of interest regarding Sgt. York and Cordell Hull and additional information about the area.
