Greetings!

School is out and summer is here and the FIRST Dale Hollow Lake Poker Run is schedule to begin this weekend - June 6-14 (played out over as few or as many days during this time frame as you wish) which will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Nashville.  If you register before the run begins, it will save you some $$.  You can get all the details and register on-line through www.DaleHollowLakePokerRun.com. Registration is the only way to obtain your Official Dale Hollow Lake Poker Run Score Card and gift item, which you will be able to pick up at the first participating marina of the run (you may also sign up at the participating marina if you haven't been able to do so prior to the event).  1 in 5 players will win with up to $2500 for first place (payout depends on the number of participants).  Some of the participating marinas are running specials during the event.  The Clay County Fair is also durning this week and the Livingston Hog Eye Festival in June 11-13.  The Monroe County Airport Fly-In and Byrdstown Kountry Kruisers will also be having events on June 6th, but you can find out more by visiting the www.DaleHollowLakePokerRun.com website and checking the event listings.  There are so many events going on all around!  We will highlight several of these below coming up for the month of June and part of July, but be sure to check the www.Go2DHL.com, www.Go2BSF.com and www.Go2FCF.com websites for a any we might have missed here.  The brand new edition of the Big South Fork Visitors' Guide is now available online at www.Go2BSF.com.  The print edition is also available throughout our local coverage area along with the Dale Hollow Lake and Fall Creek Falls Visitors Guides.  Also, keep in mind that SATURDAY is FREE FISHING DAY in Tennessee.  You can get all the details here, but be patient, this file will take a few minutes to download - it's the Tennessee Fishing Guide.  The information is on page 11.  Just think, you can fish for free on Saturday and participate in the Dale Hollow Lake Poker Run the same weekend!

Don't forget Fathers Day is June 21st!  Give Dad a getaway to his favorite destination.  There are plenty of great escapes to enjoy.  Make memories to last a lifetime for both of you.

Great news for families!  Cumberland Caverns is making it easier for families to enjoy a cave tour.  For the months of June & July 2009, Cumberland Caverns will be offering a child's ticket (regularly $10 for children 6-12) at no cost every Friday!  Cumberland Caverns is Tennessee's largest show cave and a U.S. National Natural Landmark boasting some of the largest underground rooms and the most spectacular formations in the eastern US.

It won't be long until the famed Hwy. 127 Yard Sale - The World's Longest Yard Sale.  The event received some great coverage in Parade magazine last weekend.  If you missed the article and would still like to see what they had to say, just check them out at this link.  It is possible that this rural area could claim the title of the world's yard sale capital, but it isn't official yet.  There are many marathon yard sales throughout the year.  The Hwy. 52 Yard Sale just wrapped up - May 21-22 (www.tn52.com) and the Roller Coaster Yard Sale (the oldest and most authentic marathon yard sale in Tennessee or Kentucky) is scheduled for Oct. 1-3 (www.RollerCoasterFair.com).  Even when there isn't a marathon sale scheduled, you can often find yard sale after yard sale all around.

Be sure to check out Annie's Blog on either of the websites - www.Go2DHL.com, www.Go2BSF.com or www.Go2FCF.com, for more great information regarding various destinations around the regions or special aspects of living in the area.  Also, be sure to visit our sponsors at the end of this e-mail.  They help make this information available.  Plus many offer specials that you won't find unless you visit them on the web!

Sunset Marina Earns Clean Marina Designation
Clean Marina-Sunset
Story and photos by Mark Rankin
BRYDSTOWN, TENN., May 15, 2009 - The Cumberland River that runs through Nashville continues to be used for the movement of coal, oil, and gravel, but recreation on U.S. Corps of Engineer-constructed lakes has become a major part of the river economy. Not only do environmental groups focus attention on the river and its water quality but Marina owners who provide waterway services for the counties within the Cumberland system, the river remains a vital part of local identity. On May 15, the U S Army Corps of Engineer, Nashville District Commander, Lt. Col. Bernard Lindstrom presented the Clean Marina Certificate and Banner to the Sunset Marina & Resort at Dale Hollow Lake. Sunset Marina became the third Marina on the Lake to hoist the Banner and the sixth in the Nashville District.

According to Corps Conservation Biologist and Park Ranger Sondra Carmen, the Cumberland
River Basin Clean Marina Program is a voluntary program implemented by the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers Nashville District and its watershed partners to promote environmentally responsible marina and boating practices. It is designed as an ongoing program to reduce water pollution and erosion in the Cumberland River watershed. The program is designed to help marina operators protect the very resource that provides them with their livelihood. It also encourages boater education, increased coordination among state agencies, and better communication of existing laws.  "We worked closely with our Marinas to accomplish their tasks and adhere to rules on our checklist," said Carmen." The program has established a list of seven management measures that are identified as priorities in order for the marina to fly the flag of a "Clean Marina." These criteria include: sewage management; fuel control; solid waste; petroleum recycling & disposal; vessel operation, maintenance, and repair; marina siting, design, and maintenance; storm water management & erosion control; and public education. The Steps to becoming a designated Clean Marina are straightforward, beginning with a pledge, which is a commitment to controlling pollution and erosion at their facility and promoting water protective behavior with the boating public.

Marinas must familiarize themselves with the Program guidebook and accompanying checklist.
With that checklist, they must conduct a self assessment and invite the lake resource manager to visit and endorse the marina for the program. "It's a detailed process but every Marina operator must take a number of steps to attain certification and they must first sign a pledge and commit to controlling pollution and erosion at their facility and to promote water-protective behavior with the boating public, added Carmen." The Clean Marina program allows marina operators to certify they are environmentally conscious and are attempting to go above and beyond what is required by law, regulations and within their lease requirements.

Representatives from the Corps of Engineers, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Upper
Cumberland Tourism Association, from Congressman Lincoln Davis' office, and the Cumberland
River Compact were on hand to witness the event. "The District's Clean Marina Program is worthy of this recognition and we certify you as a clean Marina," said Lindstrom. Tom Allen, Sunset Marina & Resort manager accepted the designation and banner on behalf of his employees and hoisted it just below the national ensign at the end of the pier. "This is a proud day for us here at Sunset Marina," Allen. "One thing that I've learned in my 15 years of working here is that we must take care of our lakes and rivers," said Allen. Sunset Marina joins the distinguished list of honorees that have received certification as a Clean Marina. In March of 2005, Dale Hollow's Willow Grove Marina was the first facility in the Nashville District to achieve the status of a "Clean Marina." Since then, three other marinas outside of Dale Hollow have achieved the coveted status. The benefits of achieving the "Clean Marina designation are many. By participating, marinas demonstrate their commitment to addressing water quality issues.
