Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal Addresses New York Cabinet

Bret Stephens Bret Stephens, foreign affairs columnist of The Wall Street Journal, addressed the JINSA New York Cabinet on September 19. This was the third time Mr. Stephens briefed JINSA audiences following appearances at the JINSA Board Meeting in 2010 and Los Angeles Cabinet earlier in 2012.

Mr. Stephens discussed five overarching themes including China, the accelerating collapse of the EU and its consequences for NATO, the "Islamist Winter" in the Middle East, Iran's sprint toward nuclear weapons, and American power moving to eclipse. He noted that eclipses do not last forever, but they have repercussions that are likely the effect the United States, as well as its friends and allies around the world.  He warned against the West's diminishing will to address Iran's nuclear weapons program and reiterated that we must show resolve regarding Syria.

The New York Cabinet event was attended by 75 guests.  Members of the Cabinet meet four-to-six times a year for briefings in NY to explore issues affecting both American and Israeli security.

On the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, the Administration considers al Qaeda all but defeated, and eagerly anticipates a downsized U.S. military and its reorientation to Asia and the Pacific. But, to paraphrase Mark Twain's famous quip, reports of al Qaeda's death are greatly exaggerated.
