Art Sanctuary Events
January 2010
Greetings!

Art Sanctuary and Moonstone Arts Center (formerly Robin's Bookstore) kicks off the new year with two great events.  This Monday, January 11 from 5:30pm-8pm, we celebrate haiku featuring guest poet Sonia Sanchez. She will be reading excerpts from her new book "Morning Haiku," which will be available for purchase.

If you have a high school student who likes to write poetry, then bring him/her to our writing workshop. "Haiku Remix: How to write your own" is open to students grades 7-12 who are interested in learning how to craft their own haiku. Registration is required as space is limited!

Finally, Art Sanctuary is proud to partner with the Philadelphia Daily News to present a writing contest as part of the Celebration of Black Writing Festival in May. "Haikudelphia," which runs January 11 to March 19, 2010, is open to all high school students in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. Winners will get the chance to read their winning haiku on stage at the festival's outdoor activities. Check back on our website next week for more details.

Sincerely,
Art Sanctuary Board & Staff

Art Sanctuary/Daily News Haikudelphia Writing Contest

Art Sanctuary is proud to partner with The Philadelphia Daily News to bring the first-ever haiku contest as part of the 26th Annual Celebration of Black Writing Festival (May 26-29, 2010).

"Haikudelphia" is open to all high school students in the Philadelphia and surrounding counties. Students are encouraged to write their best haiku focusing on this year's writing festival theme "Movement: Paying it Forward," in honor of the many recent and upcoming civil rights anniversaries (e.g. 45th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March, the passing of the '65 Voting Rights Act).

This contest kicks off January 11, 2010 and runs through March 19, 2010. Winners will receive prizes (value up to $500), and the chance to read their winning haiku on stage at the Celebration of Black Writing Festival's outdoor festivities on Saturday, May 29, 2010.

Contest information will be available on our website next week. Stay tuned!

Art Sanctuary & Moonstone Arts Center present, Morning Haiku: A Sonia Sanchez Reading & Book Signing.

This new volume (Morning Haiku) by the much-loved poet Sonia Sanchez, her first in over a decade, is music to the ears: a collection of haiku that celebrates the gifts of life and mourns the deaths of re-vered African-American figures in the worlds of music, literature, art, and activism.

Sanchez is innovative, composing haiku in new forms, including a section of moving two-line poems that reflect on the long wake of 9/11. In a brief and personal opening essay, the poet explains her deep appreciation for haiku as an art form. With its touching portraits and by turns uplifting and heartbreaking lyrics, Morning Haiku contains some of Sanchez's freshest, most poignant work.
