Welcome
to spring! Art Sanctuary is gearing up for Reading in Concert, our teens' multimedia
production and of course our memorial day weekend writing festival. This week's events
calendar features something for everyone (and all budgets). Check this out:
April 15th, it is our community
wide reading program, Reading in Concert. University of Pennsylvania students from
author and Professor Lorene Cary's (The Price of a Child, and
Free!) English class lead reading groups
at various community centers and schools in a common text (Mitchell & Ruff: An American Jazz Profile by William Zinsser) to
develop an appreciation of literature, and cultivate self-awareness. Students
work with their chosen location for four-weeks, and then bring their group to
attend a lecture by the selected author or a performance based on the work of
the author. On the 15th, we will feature a matinee concert, Improv from Jazz to Hip Hop, featuring Grammy-nominated
composer Hannibal Lokumbe and spoken-word artist Toni Blackman, and
special guest appearance by Willie Ruff.
We are going global and heading south! Join us for our
Groundbreaking Ceremony on 17th at 12pm at 16th &
Bainbridge Streets, the site of Art Sanctuary's new office space! Come on out and see
the space!We are saddened to say that the Preview Watch Party to WHYY's on Canvas (Friday night the 17th) featuring Art Sanctuary's 10th
anniversary concert "A Shepherd Among Us," IS CANCELLED. Please continue to check our website for details on when the show will air.Finally, if you miss our youth Spoken Word Cafe last week, check out some of the photos (courtesy of Kemah Washington) from the event. KUDOS TO OUR YOUNG PERFORMERS! They did an amazing work. Thank you to the staff of Jimmy John's, our community partner for that event. Thank you to the artist instructors and the parents of our North Stars. Great Job!

Reading In Concert: Improv from Jazz to Hip Hop

Art Sanctuary presents Grammy-nominated composer and trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe and freestyle spoken-word artist Toni Blackman (pictured below) in a
concert demonstration of improvisation, from jazz to hip hop. These two artists represent Mitchell and
Ruff's extraordinary legacy--to the tradition of American music and to us all.
Following the concert, Willie Ruff of the Mitchell & Ruff duo will make a special guest appearance for a Q & A session with students.

Groundbreaking Ceremony: Art Sanctuary Goes Global

Art Sanctuary for a Groundbreaking Celebration of its new center, at
16th
and Bainbridge Streets. In tandem with
the Church of the Advocate, home venue for large performances, this
building will give Art Sanctuary staff its own offices for the first
time in 10
years; it will allow them to put on film screenings and book signings,
and give them a new space for workshops and classrooms as well as the
ability to record
music and spoken word, and exhibit visual art. The Advocate gave Art
Sanctuary a great and
grand entrance; this will give us a place to call our own.
You have been a part of this plan, so please join us! Our special friends, donors and funders will be there,
as well as special guest Hannibal Lokumbe, composer of "A Shepherd Among Us,"
based on the life of the Advocate's Rev. Paul Washington.

Dad for A Day
Several youths longing for an active, loving and consistent
father in their lives embark upon a journey into a magical "Land of Dads"
where their wishes are granted for a dad, but only for a day. Join Art Sanctuary's North Stars after school art
students for this original multimedia production
featuring poetry, spoken word, African Dance and Drum. This is a
