Formulary (March 25, 2011) - FDA has approved ipilimumab (Yervoy, Bristol-Myers Squibb) to treat patients with late-stage (metastatic) melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
Melanoma is the leading cause of death from skin disease. Figures from the National Cancer Institute indicate an estimated 68,130 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the United States during 2010 and approximately 8,700 people died from the disease.
The last therapeutic to be approved for melanoma, Interleukin-2, benefits only 10% to 15% of those with advanced melanoma, according to the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF).
Approval by FDA of Yervoy [ipilimumab] to treat patients with late-stage melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, illustrates the focus in R&D on more specific indications in areas of clinical need, Randy Vogenberg, PhD, principal at the Institute for Integrated Healthcare in Sharon, Mass., and executive director of the Biologic Access & Finance program at The Jefferson School of Population Health in Philadelphia, told Formulary. Melanoma has been emerging in diagnosis and treatment as Baby Boomers, Gen X and Yers are aging after years of enjoying sun at the beach or backyard pool. This is not only life threatening, but represents another example like smoking cessation of altering lifestyles for future generations while having to treat expensive illness in today's population, added Vogenberg, who is also author of Pharmacy Benefits: Plan Design and Management.

Making Clinical Trials Less of a Tribulation
The shift to electronic medical records makes it easier to recruit patients - and keep them
For developers of new drugs and treatments, one of the toughest hurdles has nothing to do with medicine. It's recruiting patients for clinical trials. And when it comes to recruiting minority patients, the challenge is even greater.
New approaches are being tried that can dramatically speed up the recruiting process and reach more patients from groups frequently underrepresented in studies.
At the heart of these new methods is the shift to electronic medical records, which makes patient searches faster and more methodical - in part by also allowing researchers to involve patients in trials from day one of their treatment.
In addition, some drug companies have had success reaching out to patient advocates and other experts who know what clinics and doctors are treating the kinds of patients the firms need to test certain drugs, like those used in treating HIV.

Novel Immune Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer Developed
ScienceDaily (March 24, 2011) - Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center have discovered a novel way of treating pancreatic cancer by activating the immune system to destroy the cancer's scaffolding. The strategy was tested in a small cohort of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, several of whose tumors shrank substantially. The team believes their findings - and the novel way in which they uncovered them - could lead to quicker, less expensive cancer drug development.
The authors call the results, published in the March 25 issue of Science, a big surprise. "Until this research, we thought the immune system needed to attack the cancer directly in order to be effective," said senior author Robert H. Conderheide, MD, DPhil, an associate professor of Medicine in the division of Hematology/Oncology and the Abramson Family Cancer Research Insttitute. "Now we know that isn't necessarily so. Attacking the dense tissues surrounding the cancer is another approach, similar to attacking a brick wall by dissolving the mortar in the wall. Ultimately, the immune system was able to eat away at this tissue surrounding the cancer, and the tumors fell apart as result of that assault. These results provide fresh insight to build new immunetherapies for cancer."
The current study is part of a unique research model designed to move back and forth between the bench and the bedside, with the investigative team consisting of researchers based in both the laboratory and in the clinic. In the clinical trial led at Penn by Peter O'Dwyer, MD, professor of Hematology/Oncology, and Gregory L. Beatty, MD, PhD, instructor of Hematology/Oncology, pancreatic cancer patients received standard gemcitabine chemotherapy with an experimental antibody manufacturered by Pfizer Corporation.
