FROM THE COLLECTION by Bill Rhind

Fort Nisqually has been very fortunate to receive a number of recent donations that are significant additions to our permanent collection.  Richard Schneider donated several items from the estate of Bud McBride which are from the McLeod and Mounts families. John McLeod was a HBC worker at Fort Nisqually who also worked for a time as a stoker on the steamship Beaver.  Included in this donation is a silver earring belonging to Mary, the wife of John McLeod as well as a gold coin and bookmark belonging to John.  There is a dentalia  and trade bead necklace belonging to Catherine Mounts, the daughter of John McLeod and also a wonderful patchwork quilt associated with Catherine.

Roger and Kotomi Aldrich donated several artifacts associated with the Wheeler and Wilson sewing machine that originally belonged to Letitia Huggins. Included in this donation are: Wheeler and Wilson sewing advertisements, a glass bottle originally containing sewing machine oil, a packet of Wheeler and Wilson needles and a wooden needle case. Kotomi was so impressed with the sewing machine when we demonstrated it at last year's Sewing to Sowing event, that she was inspired to seek out and collect these Wheeler and Wilson artifacts with the idea of donating them to Fort Nisqually.

Thanks to both Richard and Kotomi for entrusting Fort Nisqually with these treasures that will help us in our mission of  interpreting the fort's past.

FORT NISQUALLY FOUNDATION NEWS

The Fort Nisqually Foundation would like to thank Bill Rhind and Anna Grzankowski for their enlightening presentations at the opening of the fort's new exhibit - "Jane's World: A Lady Coming of Age in the Fur Trade." Anna's first person presentation as the young Jane Work Tolmie brought to life many fascinating details of Jane's early life while Bill's discussion about Jane's adult life led to some lively and interesting discourse.

The Foundation is pleased to announce that they have received $2,500 from the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation to support the fort's summertime Crafts of the Past program. There will be a different artist at the fort each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day displaying their skills and giving visitors a chance to try their hand at various 19th century crafts and skills. The Foundation would like to thank Peggy Barchi for her work coordinating and organizing this program. Expect to see the full list of artists and their demonstrations very soon.
