Ian Watson Seminars Newsletter
2nd April 2007

Greetings!

Greetings from Vancouver, where the air still has a decidedly winter chill and the mountains are topped with snow.

I've enjoyed meeting friends old and new here, and we had a good time exploring the Tao of Homeopathy at the UBC Botanical Gardens over the weekend. I'll be heading home in a couple of days, and hope to see you soon,

Warm wishes,
Ian

  • You are what you do - is that true?

One of the questions I'm most frequently asked these days is 'what do you call yourself now, Ian'? The question usually arises after it becomes obvious that I don't seem to have a clearly-defined job description like 'homeopath' any more. And I find its a difficult question to answer.

Part of the problem seems to stem from the fact that we like to label ourselves, and each other, according to whatever role we have identified ourselves with at the time. Which is fine, up to a point, provided you have a familiar and easily recognizable role that doesn't change too often.

Some years ago, when homeopathy occupied most of my waking hours, I was more than happy to call myself 'homeopath'. But gradually, over time, I added more strings to my bow, and the emphasis of my work shifted away from its former medical orientation towards inner growth and self-transformation. It became clear that the description I had given myself was no longer adequate, or even accurate, and so I stopped using it.

What do you call a person who specializes in belief change, consciousness transformation, energy healing and emotional release work? Who sometimes uses remedies, but often doesn't? Who works with groups as well as individuals? As far as I'm aware, there isn't a collective noun out there that perfectly encapsulates all of this.

What I've noticed is that I'm not the only one facing this dilemma. When I discuss this problem with friends and colleagues, an increasing number of them relate a similar experience. I don't know if this reflects the fact that more and more practitioners are broadening their work and feeling boxed-in by their original title, or if they are simply no longer comfortable with any kind of label that fails, ultimately, to reflect the totality of who they are. Perhaps its a little bit of both.

The fourth and final talk in the Inner Work Series, entitled 'The Union of Opposites' is now available as a double CD set as well as an mp3 download.

In this talk, Ian discusses the mystical sacred marriage, the reconciliation of opposites within oneself. Central to the teachings of alchemy, taoism and the christian mystical tradition, this is the ultimate challenge on the spiritual path.
