Ian Watson Seminars Newsletter
21st December 2006

Greetings!

As 2006 draws to a close, I'd like to offer a heartfelt thank-you to all of you who have joined me on seminars or retreats, consulted with me individually, or made a connection through my books and recordings during this past year. Without your support, I wouldn't have been able to achieve that fortunate combination of making a living doing the work that I love to do.

As we move towards the new year, I have seminars aplenty to look forward to in 2007, a new book beginning to take shape, a website re-design well under way...... and that's just for starters! I'll keep you posted of these and other developments. May you have a peaceful and joyous transition into the new year.

Warm wishes,
Ian

  • The Demise of the Expert

Over the past few years, there has been a consistent and unrelenting movement in the direction of personal responsibility. People in all walks of life are waking up to the realization that the so-called experts don't have all the answers. The internet has levelled the playing field in a remarkably short time, making available to anyone who has the desire to know all of the information that was once held private by a select group.

My prediction is that this trend will continue to gather pace, and nowhere will it be more evident than in the field of health care and personal development. A recent survey of British doctors' views on how the internet has impacted on the GP-patient relationship found that 61% of the GPs questioned felt that internet useage could lead to patients being better informed than their doctors on aspects of their care. If the old medical model of authoritarian practitioner and relatively uninformed patient is not already redundant, it pretty soon will be.

I tend to trust that as human consciousness evolves, the resources that are needed to support the process are made manifest. In some cases, like flower essences for example, they have been around for decades but suddenly take a quantum leap in popularity and availability. In other cases, like the field of NLP for example, innovative new techniques are found which spread like wildfire as soon as they hit the ground.

In the past few years I have explored the work on cellular healing pioneered by Brandon Bays, and the simple yet powerful technique for transforming limiting beliefs discovered by Byron Katie. I've been investigating a whole range of approaches to emotional healing, including the Sedona Method , Emotional Freedom Technique and other methods being developed in the exciting new field of 'Energy Psychology'.

What all of these techniques have in common is that they can be learned and practiced by virtually anyone, and ordinary people like you and I can, with practice, achieve some extraordinary results. Edward Bach, the originator of the Bach Flower Essences, foresaw this trend and encouraged everyone to make and administer their own essences for themselves and their family.

If you happen to make your living as an expert in one of the 'helping' professions, I would recommend paying attention to this movement towards autonomy and, as best you can, align yourself with it sooner rather than later. It's time for us to stop helping people, and to start teaching them how to help themselves. They're ready and waiting!

    Unfurl Sculpture

    'Unfurl'

As I took the above photo, a woman approached me and asked if I knew anything about the sculpture. "No," I said. "But I like it a lot." She told me that she liked it too, but when she took a group of tourists around the area she avoided it because she didn't know anything about it, and people were bound to ask her questions. "You could let them have their own experience," I suggested. "No," she said. "You can't do that in my job. People expect me to know everything." "I understand," I said. "I used to have a job like that, too....."
