What's cooking this week?

NATIONAL CHICKEN MONTH IS HERE, AND WHITE OAK PASTURES HAS PLENTY TO CLUCK ABOUT:  A NEW CHICKEN ABATTOIR TO PROCESS FREE-RANGE CHICKEN

White Oak PasturesDrumsticks, please!  White Oak Pastures has opened its new on-farm poultry abattoir -- the only USDA-inspected poultry processing facility available to farmers for processing free-range pastured poultry in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi.  White Oak Pastures began processing birds in the new facility on August 29.  With National Chicken Month flying in for September, that's tasty news for all you thigh men and wing-lovin' women out there.  Look for more in the way of chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese from Will Harris and his five-generation, family owned and operated Bluffton, Ga. farm. Harris is adding to his bird herd as he further develops the farm's Serengeti Plains rotational grazing model that moves cows, sheep and birds through pastures for feeding and fertilizing -- a method that has existed for centuries in Africa.  White Oak Pastures participates in the Global Animal Partnership's Five-Step Animal Welfare Rating Standards program and is one of only two farms in the country to receive the Step Five certification on its chickens (and one of only a handful of farms to receive the Step Four certification on cattle). Look for White Oak Pastures chicken in your favorite restaurants and grocery stores.

BOCCE BALLS ARE ROLLING IN SANDY SPRINGS AND THE WESTSIDE.  DOUBLE ZERO NAPOLETANA AND ORMSBY'S HOST ATLANTA BOCCE BALL FALL LEAGUE

Ormsby's

Ormsby's

Get your game face on!  According to the Atlanta Bocce League (ABL), bocce ranks third in worldwide sports participation (behind soccer and golf) and is considered to be the oldest-known sport in world history.  In true southern Italian style, Double Zero Napoletana in Sandy Springs is finishing up installation of bocce ball courts on its generous patio, and both courts will soon be ready for bocce action.

Don't know if you have what it takes?  The ABL says bocce essentials are "something to sit on, something to sip on, something to listen to, and the bocce balls." Think you can handle that?  The restaurant will host the Atlanta Bocce Ball fall league from 6:15 - 10 p.m. every Wednesday night for eight weeks beginning on September 14.  Don't forget the sips at Double Zero's full bar, or the sits -- as in sitting down to share small plates, dinner or dessert after the match!  More on Facebook

Bocce is already well entrenched in the game repertoire of Ormsby's. The Atlanta Bocce League will play fall games at this Westside bar and eatery on Monday nights beginning September 19 from 6:15 - 10 p.m.  Ormsby's is home to Atlanta's premier indoor bocce league...good to know because a) no rainouts (in case it does rain); b) no dry spells (abundance of cold brews and other libations); and c) plenty of fuel for the games with hearty appetizers, sandwiches and burgers.

To participate, sign up at www.atlbocce.com by Thursday, September 1.  Registration costs $45 per player with a five-player minimum per team.  Teams registering with fewer than five players may absorb other registrants to form a complete team.

YELPER GETS IT TO GO BECAUSE YOU CAN'T EAT IN AT NICK'S

YelperIn the coffee shop scenes of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," the family members downed coffee and dished out opinions.  Not so at Nick's Food To Go, where it's all about getting it and going.  But what you get, according to Yelper Paul S., is some pretty terrific gyro sandwiches and tzatziki and friendly staff to send you on your way with lots to smile about.

Nick's is soooo great!! Went for lunch today and I'm already wanting to go back. Best Gyro I've ever had. Lamb, lettuce, tomato, tatziki sauce and the best warm and crispy pita that's ever wrapped any of my sandwiches before. Try the Greek fries as well. It's enough to feed two and it comes with a side of tatziki. The sauce is a little more chunky and raw than I've had in the past. I love it!

My Gyro was perfect. I lacked nothing and it was full of amazingness! The wait wasn't all that bad. Nick said 10 minutes and he was about spot on. What else can you ask for people?

Go...it's an odd location, but not far off of Memorial and reasonably easy to find. Prices are appropriate, food is great, and the people are interesting and friendly.
