CHEF DEMOS DEVOUR PRODUCE AT LOCAL FARMERS MARKETS THIS WEEK!

TomatoesGeorgia summers provide good pickings for anyone who loves Southern cooking.  Who hasn't wanted to sit down to a plate of the best the garden plot affords? Peaches, greens, squash, tomatoes, blueberries...it's all good, and too soon, it'll be gone.

Woodfire Grill Executive Chef and "Top Chef" star Kevin Gillespie ventures OTP to share his skills at the Dunwoody Green Market on Wednesday, July 21.  The producer-only market takes place Wednesday mornings from 8 a.m. until noon adjacent to the Dunwoody Post Office in Dunwoody Village.  Look for Kevin around 10:30 a.m.  Come early to snatch a fruity muffin or some crusty, baked bread to munch while perusing locally grown and produced goods.  All produce vendors follow organic methods and most are Certified Naturally Grown or Certified Organic.

Chef Ford Fry of JCT. Kitchen & Bar stops at the junction of hand-picked and vine -- the Peachtree Road Farmers Market -- on Saturday, July 24.  There will be plenty of locally raised raw materials to fuel his regionally inspired dishes and Southern specialties!  Don't miss his 10:30 a.m. demo.  Maybe he'll hint about the upcoming Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (more below)!  The Peachtree Road Farmers Market is open from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Saturdays from April through December in the parking lot of The Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, NW.

Spice Market Chef Mauro Gomez toques up at the Piedmont Park Green Market on Saturday, July 24. He'll tempt morning shoppers by stirring up Southeast Asian-inspired dishes from Southeastern U.S.-grown (as in Georgia) ingredients.  Park your shopping bags and look for him from 11 a.m. - noon under the patio at the Piedmont Park Community Center.
WHEN IT'S HOT AS THE MOJAVE, TOSS BACK SOME AGAVE! DRINK TO NATIONAL TEQUILA DAY AT UNCLE JULIO'S AND THE ORIGINAL EL TACO

El Taco MargaritaIf the moon was shining, tequila wouldn't be. Aztec lore has it that a bolt of lightning jolted an agave plant into releasing tequila from its juicy interior. Toast the legend and the resulting libations on National Tequila Day, Saturday, July 24.  At The Original El Taco, the tequila portion of the drinks menu reads like a who's who of tequilas to be met straight up, face to face.  "FroMos" and on-the-rocks margaritas befriend mixed drink lovers by the glass or pitcher and include a variety of tequilas and mixers.  Welcome the Original, Palermo Texas, Key West, El Primo, Resales and El Big Boy margaritas to put some "Ole!" in your Virginia Highland visit. Over in Buckhead and Sandy Springs, 15 types of tequilas and their margarita relatives are equally sociable at both Uncle Julio's Fine Mexican Food locations. The Swirl, twirling frozen margarita and frozen sangria, is the most popular of the more than 200,000 margaritas and tequila drinks served monthly at Uncle Julio's restaurants nationwide. Popular cousins include the classic frozen, strawberry and Chambord margaritas and the Baja Gold frozen margarita, which mixes Corona with frozen margarita.  Uncle Julio's managers go through "tequila training" in Guadalajara, Mexico each fall to do justice to the magical elixir in drinks and recipes.

Attack of the Killer TomatoWhen the Killer Tomato dropped down on JCT. Kitchen & Bar last summer, local farmers, chefs and mixologists fought back with knives, spoons, pots, alcohol and blenders.  The time is ripe for a rematch.  The Killer Tomato will be back with reinforcements for the second annual JCT. YELPER NOTES PARISH IS GENEROUS WITH AMBIANCE AND FOOD

YelperParish, the Southern/Creole eatery in Inman Park, oozes with friendly staff and big portions of great delicious dishes. Yelper Han L. came for brunch to take new photos and to compare it with a previous dinner visit.  Thumbs up both ways!

I came here for the brunch for the first time today. I arrived 13 minutes after it opened and the place was already getting busy. The windows were opened so there were a lot of natural light shining through :) The place looks very quaint and lively during brunch, but I like the romantic ambient during dinner better.

The restaurant was well-staffed and service was very timely. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I order the Chicken Poulet; fried chicken, grits, and a biscuit the size of a cd (no lie!). What a sight to see! Hot damn! The dish was pretty good, although I have to say the grits was a little dry. I knew it was going to be thick, as the waitress forewarned, but it was also a little too dry for my taste. Overall though, I was very satisfied. I'm also ashamed to say the portion was too big for me and had to get a to-go box.

I also revisited downstairs. Free wi-fi, great hang-out, some cool random books to look at (pictures from Katrina aftermath, and a how to plan your pregnancy...), really yummy looking goodies that would be sinful for me to have after the big meal.

I got to meet Chef Nick, who was kind enough to step from the kitchen to say hi and asked about our dining experience.
