PACCI RISTORANTE CELEBRATES ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH MONTH-LONG SPECIALS BENEFITING ATLANTA HUMANE SOCIETY

Keira and MagnoliaTongues started wagging in favor of Pacci Ristorante as soon as the Italian steakhouse opened in Midtown last May . . . and they continued to do so when Esquire magazine named Pacci among its "Best New Restaurants of 2009."  As Pacci celebrates its first anniversary this month by partnering with the 127-year-old Atlanta Humane Society (AHS), you can bet tails are joining tongues in gleeful wagging.  Throughout May, Pacci will donate $1 to AHS for each signature carpaccio or new spring cocktail ordered.  "We've had a very successful first year in business and want to take this opportunity to thank the Atlanta community for supporting us by giving something back," says Pacci Ristorante's General Manager Marc Taft.  "Many of Pacci's employees and guests are animal lovers -- Pacci Executive Chef Keira Moritz has a border collie herself -- and hold the AHS close to their hearts."  Guests are invited to bring useful gifts the likes of newspapers, blankets, cat litter or something else on the AHS Wish List.  For those looking to bring even more puppy love into their lives, Atlanta Humane Society has even named an adorable, adoptable Schnauzer mix in honor of Pacci!

TO MARKET, TO MARKET TO SEE A CHEF'S GIG:  ARIA'S GERRY KLASKALA AT PIEDMONT PARK AND AQUA BLUE CHEFS AT RIVERSIDE FARMERS MARKET ON MAY 15

Farmers MarketTo get any closer to the source, they'd have to cook in a field!   See what Atlanta chefs are cooking up at local farmers markets this Saturday, May 15.  At the Piedmont Park Green Market, Gerry Klaskala of Aria will whip up dishes using seasonal produce with his usual wit and culinary flair.  Look for him at the demo kitchen under the patio at the Community Center 11 a.m. until noon.  Shoppers, the market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday mornings through December 11 at the 12th Street entrance gate.  (Aria:  490 East Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead; 404-233-7673)

Meanwhile, across the Chattahoochee River at the Riverside Farmers Market, Aqua blue chefs will stir up some mealtime excitement at the cooking demo booth.  Riverside Market originally graced the banks of the Chattahoochee at Riverside Park, but it's moved on to bigger pastures -- the more plentiful space, parking and longer season afforded by the market's new location at Roswell City Hall.  Georgia-grown produce and goods abound, for instance, vegetables, herbs, plants, cut flowers, organic meats, cheeses, soaps, honey and even compost.  Music and special events keep things lively.  Open Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon from May 15 through October 30, rain or shine!  Riverside Farmers Market:  38 Hill Street; 404-613-7670.  (Aqua blue:  1564 Holcomb Bridge Road; 770-643-8886)

ToulouseSpring has sprung a fresh new menu upon the tables of Toulouse, Buckhead's American bistro where vibrant artwork by Steve Penley keeps the walls as enticing as the food!  Chill-out starters include cold strawberry soup, shrimp lettuce wraps and mimosa deviled eggs with curry tuna and capers ($4.50-$10.50).  Entrées add spice:  pan-seared catfish served with creamy chipotle sauce, hush puppies and green beans; southwestern-spiced chicken breast served with roasted corn salsa on a bed of spinach and sprinkled with cheddar; and buffalo meatballs atop gorgonzola mashed potatoes with Dijon and baby portabella sauce and steamed asparagus ($15.95 - $18.25) Wine pairings by the glass and bottle are suggested on the menu.  Psst.  There's no corkage fee on Sundays!

LINK UP WITH THE GEORGIA CHAIN GANG TO BIKE FROM ATKINS TO ATKINS ON MAY 16 FOR LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA'S RACE ACROSS AMERICA

Warren BrunoBe a "spokes" person, lending your support for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the Race Across America (RAAM) cycling fundraiser on Sunday, May 16.  Hop on your bike and join the 2010 Georgia Chain Gang as they ride from Atkins Park Tavern - Virginia Highland to Atkins Park Tavern - Smyrna and back.  Along the way, you'll stop in Smyrna for a breakfast buffet, then climb back in the saddle for the ride to Virginia Highland, via Ormsby's.  $30 per person; 8:30 a.m. start from the back lot of Atkins Park - Virginia Highland.

Join in and you'll experience a fun, albeit cushy morning ride compared to what the racers will endure when the real, 3,000-mile race starts on June 12 in Oceanside, Calif.  Bikers will ride in rotating shifts, 24/7 through 16 states and will finish the race in six to nine days -- much tougher than the Tour de France.  But then, so is dealing with leukemia and lymphoma.  That's why longtime Atlanta restaurateur Warren Bruno, a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer survivor himself, is pitching in as co-crew chief for the Georgia Chain Gang.  Bruno recently learned his cancer has returned, and he is undergoing treatment.  Never daunted, he has raised more than $22,000 over the past three years as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training.  You've probably enjoyed one of Bruno's restaurants -- over the past 35 years, he has owned and operated 12 popular restaurants including Atkins Park Restaurants and Ormbsy's.

Atkins Park Tavern - Virginia Highland:  794 North Highland Avenue; 404 -876-7249.
Atkins Park Tavern - Smyrna:  Market Village, 2840 Atlanta Road; 770-435-1887.

RA SUSHI HOSTS 6TH ANNUAL NICKY'S WEEK FOR ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL WITH A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHILDREN'S MENU

Nicky's WeekEdamame, Tootsy maki, shrimp nigiri, pork gyoza, tuna tataki and chicken yakitori, plus FIJI Water, Red Bull and sugar-fee Red Bull and The Republic of Tea are all among the menu items that will benefit children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz. during Nicky's Week, May 30 - June 5 at RA Sushi.  It's not your typical children's menu, and it's not your usual hospital -- St. Jude is one of the world's premier pediatric cancer research centers.  Nicky's Week was developed in memory of longtime St. Jude patient Nicholas "Nicky" Mailliard, of Scottsdale, Ariz., who lost a long battle with brain cancer in February 2005 at the young age of 13.  The nephew of one of RA Sushi's founders, young Nicky won the hearts of RA Sushi associates as he struggled with cancer.  RA Sushi initiated the annual fundraiser in his honor to help St. Jude, where no child is ever turned away due to a family's inability to pay for medical treatments.  Back to the Nicky's Week menu -- all 25 RA Sushi locations nationwide will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from their Nicky's Week menu items to St. Jude.  In 2009, the restaurant company raised nearly $500,000, and they hope to up that by $125,000 this year!

RA Sushi:  1080 Peachtree Street at 1010 Midtown; 404-267-0114.

YELPER PENS ODE TO MORELLI'S GOURMET ICE CREAM & DESSERTS

YelperIf we didn't know Yelper Chad W. was describing an ice cream spot, we'd swear he was writing a letter to his true love.  Maybe the ice cream at Morelli's Gourmet Ice Cream & Desserts in East Atlanta Village IS his true love.  So be it.  We can't wait for the wedding reception.

Oh Morelli's, how I love you and your creamy, sweet (but not too) concoctions.  I have been here in the middle of summer, on perfect ice cream days, and the first week after their reopening, when I couldn't hold my ice cream without getting frostbite.  I make up excuses to not cook and go out for dinner in the area just so I can subtly suggest a stop in on the way home.  Spoon Eastside, you have made hundreds of dollars due to nothing more than your sheer proximity to Morelli's.

I don't have favorite flavors, really, but the butter pecan, sweet corn and maple walnut are my defaults.  I'm not sure about the gelato, generally, because Paolo's does a fine job if I'm in the mood for that.

Kissing discounts, dancing discounts, 30316 discounts: I have gotten you all.  Waffle cones, sugar cones, and cups: thank you for holding my ice cream so competently. Without alcohol or cigarettes, Ice Cream, you are the chosen vice of my life.  Thank you, Morelli's, for sweetening up my average weeknight.

Morelli's Gourmet Ice Cream & Desserts:  749 Moreland Avenue, SE; 404- 622-0210.
