Did you see it?  President Obama Gives Powerful Props to PFLAG in Saturday's Speech Broadcast on Live TV!!

Were you watching CNN or C-SPAN on Saturday evening when President Obama addressed the crowd at the Human Rights Campaign Annual Dinner in Washington, DC?  He gave an impassioned speech outlining his unwavering support for GLBT rights to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.  Of course, many in our community have become skeptical about his commitment to GLBT rights as we have yet to see positive results for our community since his inauguration (which, we must remember, was only 9 months ago).  However, given all that is on his plate -- the financial crisis, the housing crisis, two active wars, health care reform, and more, it's not entirely within his power to move forward on the issues important to our community.  He must also have the commitment of the Congress and the active support of the GLBT community -- two things he can't always rely on, unfortunately.  Nevertheless, his speech on Saturday went a long way in reassuring our community that we are still on his "to do" list, and that he does plan to act on his promises to our community during his presidency.

If you didn't get to see the speech, then you might be surprised to learn that President Obama singled out PFLAG, and especially one very special PFLAG mom, Jeanne Manford, as a shining example of how ordinary people can do extraordinary things and through their efforts, help change the world.  It was truly an unexpected and heartwarming moment to hear President Obama praise our wonderful organization, and through Jeanne's shining example, the dedicated work of PFLAG volunteers everywhere.  But don't take our word for it -- listen to President Obama's words yourself:

President Obama Supports Our Work -- Will You Support It Too?

If you've been reading our emails the past two months, then you hopefully are aware that we have been conducting our annual membership drive
.
I'm very sad to report that our membership drive results haven't been very good this year.  Thus far, our membership renewals have plunged a glaring 70% from the previous year -- and, they are now only 10% of our membership level from just four years ago.

Frankly, we're stunned by the lack of response from our calls for financial support.  We know first-hand that our services are still needed -- we still receive plenty (too many!) calls and emails from parents and GLBT people in crisis and/or struggling with 'coming out' issues.  Attendance at our local support meetings is increasing, and we're about to start a fourth support location in North Scottsdale to accommodate everyone seeking out our services.  We also know the need continues because we are being sought out by people in other areas of our state to assist with the start of new chapters in their communities -- and we never refuse such requests!  Your financial support helps those here in the Phoenix area as well as those in the smaller towns and communities in our state.

President Obama spoke of the young man "somewhere in America tonight" who will go to bed struggling with these very issues, and who will soon decide to "share his secret" with those he loves.  PFLAG volunteers are standing by every day to assist that young man, and his parents, and his family, and his schoool, and his community when the need arises.  All we ask of you is your continued financial support to help make this vital service available for these families as it was there for you and your family.   This is your opportunity to "pay it forward."
