.25 Seconds: Beyond Survive to Thrive! with Lori Darley
At any given moment in life, we can react to the circumstances life
hands us or create our lives through our choices, moment by moment by
moment. Lori uses the new brain science to demonstrate how we as
human beings can leverage our choice point of power by transforming
survival based thinking into intentional, committed action. When: Thursday, 09/18 Registration: 6:00p Program: 6:30p Where: Chocolate Angel, 635 W. Campbell, Richardson, TX 75080 Cost (includes dinner): $20/members, $35/guests RSVP here. |
This Space a poem by Lori Darley |

From nothing I came
From nothing I am
From nothing I act
without history or reason
belief or denial
I am a clearing for all
that is yearning to be
I am a clearing for all possibility.
Thoughts will come and thoughts can go
But to nothing I return
and from nothing I emerge.
For nothing is the space between the divine spark,
the rest between two notes
Nothing asks for nothing
and gets nothing in return
a
pureness of reciprocity
From nothing the wave rises and to nothing the wave falls
From calm to storm to calm again.
From nothing the cloud forms,
lightening strikes and rain falls.
Followed again,
by the clear, static free sky
From nothing my purest heart speaks and these words on this page came
And though they fill up your head and may move your heart and stir your soul
These too return, like you, to nothing.
So let us celebrate this nothingness
so that this space and peace and rest
may arise and
dissolve
From nothing
to nothing.

Greetings!
As September picks up speed, and life accelerates with all the goals and commitments made to myself, family and career associates, I notice my body begins to contract against being over-scheduled and yearning for space, both literal and temporal. While we all know the benefit of returning attention to the breath, I'd also like to share another somatic practice which, as of late, has truly come in handy, in my own life. When I notice my mind getting caught up in either worry about the future or regrets about the past, I stop what I'm doing, close my eyes, and imagine a warm washcloth across my eyes and temples. Doing so helps me to not only relax my eyes, but also to take a moment to create more positive, life-affirming thoughts. I am brought back to the now-ness of the present moment.
Besides the obvious comfort brought from the image itself, using such a sensory-rich image also helps signal something very important to the brain. When we're in a state of anxiety or fear, our eyes tend to narrow which then restricts the sensory information received through the pupils. This tells the brain that we're in a threatening situation. By imagining this warm cloth, the muscles around my eyes lose their tension and my brain seems to get the message that there is no threat, and I'm able to return to my activity with a feeling of safety and comfort.
This is one of the ways I create space in my life for self-care. This month, your invitation is to create space in your life for profound self-care and gentle awareness. Whether it's an hour for meditation in the morning, or a 30-second break from your computer to close your eyes and breathe deeply, any time spent in self-care contributes to the sense of spaciousness that will permeate your day and soothe your soul.
