Focus on What Works!
Greetings!

Each of us has a thousand opportunities every day to "solve problems." From the mundane... "Where on earth did I leave my cell phone?
" "Should I complain about the lousy customer service I got today?" to the major... "Should I stay in an unfulfilling marriage?" "Is it time for a career change?"

However, it's not so much the solutions we come up with as it is how we approach these "problems," even before solving them, that determines our joy and fulfillment in life.  Our perspective monumentally matters. When we look at situations as problems needing solving, that's what we'll continue to experience - problems.

I invite you to try something different.  Appreciative Inquiry is a revolutionary practice that evolves organizations and communities in positive, self-directed ways. Developed by Dr. David Cooperrider at Case Western Reserve University for businesses, governments, and local communities, it can also be easily applied to any and all aspects of our lives, including our relationships, career choices and every-day issues.

Appreciative Inquiry focuses on what works, what delights and discovering the countless opportunities hidden within every situation.

Appreciative Inquiry rouses hope, kindles optimism and can corrode any so-called "problems".

Any of us, if we chose to, could complain all day about our suffering. But when we start to find the sparkling jewels of opportunity and possibility in our lives, we can't help but to see things differently. It changes everything, and that's exactly what Appreciative Inquiry is about.

Imagine the possibilities,
Lori Darley

Appreciative Inquiry:
A Four-Step Process

Think of a situation or a "problem" you are currently facing in your life.  In your journal or on your computer, spend time answering the following questions, that will take you through the process.

1. Discover
In this first step, you initiate an inquiry to discover what makes the situation or "problem" great. This is not a typo. Brainstorm as long of a list as you can on all of the positive attributes, situations, opportunities and nuances of this particular issue.

Questions to ask:
  • What is really great about this, already, right now?
  • What is going really well about this?
  • Are there any shining examples of success already existing in this situation?
  • What attributes, however small, do you appreciate about it?
  • What is positive and unique about it? What is right about it?
2. Dream
Now begin to let your imagination create positive, life-affirming possibilities inherent in the potential of the situation. You are uncovering the ideal future of the situation.

Questions to ask:
  • What would ideal, everyday activities look like?
  • How can the world be bettered because of this situation?
  • What is it's purpose?
  • What things, specifically, do I want to keep, no matter how much the situation changes?
3. Design
You now have a vision for what your particular situation can become. It's time to select and determine what specific things you will change, add, or remove.

Questions to ask:
  • What concrete steps need to be taken to bring the situation closer to its optimal potential?
  • What needs to be added, removed, or rearranged?
  • What should I do more of?
  • What can I do to support what I came up with in the Discovery stage?
4. Destiny
The final stage in the Appreciative Inquiry is the action stage- taking the ideas birthed in the process into creation. Start small with realistic, do-able action steps that excite and inspire you. Since this stage is all about DOING, there are no questions here. Just get doing!

Using this technique has the power to completely and utterly shift your thinking, your responses and your destiny. The Appreciative Inquiry process can dramatically affect the way you think and act toward anything life offers you. You will see your so-called "problems" magically transformed into opportunities.

I want to know how this process has worked for you. Contact me with your stories, feedback and successes. The possibilities are endless, the potential is immeasurable. Have fun!
