WHY I LOVE WESTSIDE

NORTH ONE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: CHRISTINA WANG

When people ask, "What did you do over the summer," it is not everyday that the response is, "I went to Taiwan to teach English to underprivileged children," yet Christina Wang, senior at Westside High School, was chosen from several hundreds of teens all over the world to do just that.

The volunteer program, AID, selects 350 native English speakers from around the world, who have an understanding of Chinese and show scholarliness. These 17 and 18 year olds then go into Taiwanese schools and teach English to underprivileged children.

Tina spent a month living at the school, teaching English to nine to eleven year olds. During her time in Taiwan, Tina developed relationships with her co-teacher, the seven other student teachers, and the children, who go to school Monday through Friday, from 9:00 to 4:00 in a non-air-conditioned room. Although she had to rough it without air-conditioning for a while, Tina also got to explore the country, visiting various places with her new friends.

When asked about her experience, Tina smiles and takes out her pictures full of happy faces, children and 17 or 18 year olds, delighted to have such an experience. Always affable and positive, Tina loved making connections with volunteers from around the world. What a great Westside ambassador!

FRESHMEN PARENT MEETING THIS THURSDAY

With a few weeks behind us, our freshmen should be settling into life at Westside. They have schedules ironed out and their textbooks in hand, and they can navigate from one side of the campus to the other during the passing period and even know where to find Vendoland. We hope they are trying out some clubs and attending Westside events.

As our students adjust day-to-day, the transition to high school can be a bit longer for parents. There is still much information to share with you to ensure a successful four years at Westside and we hope you will join us on Thursday, September 20 for the annual Freshmen Parent Meeting. If you still need to sign up for Parent Student Connect please arrive closer to 6:00 PM. Otherwise, please arrive by 6:30 PM. Come learn how you can get your kids off to a strong start in this critical first year!
SOFTBALL PLAYER WILL BE HEADING TO BOSTON COLLEGE ON FULL SCHOLARSHIP

Tatiana Cortez, N2 Senior, had a pretty intense summer following her junior year. Although awards aren't anything new to the softball standout, she was awarded her most prestigious award yet being named to the Texas Sportswriter's Association 1st Team All-State. Tatiana ranked in the Top Five in the Greater Houston Area in all offensive categories as well as ranked in the Top 10 statewide in those same categories for the 2012 season. She was named 1st Team All-District for the third consecutive year and seems to not be slowing down any time soon.

After many years of playing the game she loved, Tatiana quickly found herself on a number of collegiate softball watch lists including Arkansas, McNeese State, Pitt, and Boston College. She began the decision process by trying to weigh all of the pros and cons of the universities involved (education, athletics, future, etcetera). On Tuesday, September 4th, 2012, she made her decision - Boston College! Tatiana will be receiving a full-ride scholarship next fall to catch and play 3rd for the Eagles.

"We are excited for Tatiana! This really shows hard work does pay off. Tat is our first All-State Recipient in the softball program and our first Division I signee. She is definitely leaving her stamp here at Westside and will be missed dearly. However, we do have one more season with her and we hope to make the most of it going further in the playoffs than we have in the past," Coach McNeely states about Senior, Tatiana Cortez. We look forward to watching that last season here, as well as the seasons ahead in Boston!
BIG THANKS TO JERSEY MIKE'S FOR SUPPORTING NEW TEACHERS

The new sandwich shop on the block, Jersey Mike's, donated a humongous variety of sandwiches and delicious cookies to cater the third New Teacher Lunch last Thursday. Although this is Jersey Mike's first year as a Westside neighbor, they made sure our new teachers know that they are supported by all of our community. With lunch provided, the new teachers were able to discuss grading philosophies and meet our new principal! We have three weekly New Teacher Lunches left, so if you would also like to show your support of our new teachers by providing a lunch or dessert in the future, please contact Rob MacGregor at rmacgreg@houstonisd.org

COME DINE WITH US AT THE NINTH ANNUAL OUTBACK STEAK NIGHT

The Outback Culinary Academy at Westside High School and Outback Steakhouse will present the 9th Annual Outback Steak Night on Thursday, September 27, from 6:30-8:30 pm. Please join us for a fabulous meal donated by Outback Steakhouse and prepared by our talented student chefs! The menu includes Blue Cheese Chopped Salad, Sirloin and Shrimp with Green Beans and Garlic Mashed Potatoes, with a Gourmet Dessert Station! Tickets are $25 and may be purchased from a Culinary Arts student, in the Outback, by calling 281-920-8000, ext. 6079, or by emailing rmarti28@houstonisd.org. All proceeds from the event go toward program scholarships and educational opportunities.

THE PSAT IS COMING

All 9th-11th grade students will be taking the PSAT on October 17th in homeroom. Ninth and tenth grade students take the test for free, thanks to a district grant. All eleventh grade students need to bring their $14 (or $7 if on free or reduced lunch) to A205.

Why should you take the PSAT? (from www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about)

·Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.

·See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.

·Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (Grade 11).

·Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.

·Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.

If you have any questions, feel free to stop by The College Center in A205.

MUSIC BOOSTERS SELLING HOMECOMING MUMS

Homecoming this year is October 5th. The Westside Band Boosters is once again making Homecoming Mums for Westside students. These beautiful Homecoming Mums are custom made by band parents and come in three lengths: 15" (garter for the young men), 24" (friendship), and 36". Stop by the Homecoming Mum table in the Commons during lunch to get more information and to pick up an order form.

I enjoy the teachers and meeting new students. There is no segregation among the Westside community. That's why I love Westside.
-Megan Lee, Junior student
