SENIOR NEWS

EAST 1 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - DEONDRE DALEY
Deondre "Straight A" Daley is a senior who has represented Westside's Business Academy honorably and hopes to pursue a business management degree in college. A four-year veteran of our football team, Deondre will graduate in the top quartile of his class with a 3.6 GPA and was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Houston Grocery Manufacturers Representative Association, a service organization providing scholarships to Houston area students pursuing careers in the grocery business. This summer he will take part in a management internship with H.E.B. before beginning college in the fall.
When asked about Deondre, many of his teachers had a lot to say about this outstanding young man. His English teacher Ms. Hollingsworth writes, "Deondre is a hard worker and really cares about the quality of his work. He comes to tutorials for extra help on major assignments to make sure that he is on top of his work. He helps others in class when they need extra assistance and always has a positive attitude. Deondre has been a pleasure to have in my class this year!" Coach Byrd says Deondre is always "responsible to his role. He was a great role player for us in football and came to work every day. He is highly self-motivated and very caring towards the betterment of the team and program." Mr. Anderson-Kelly says, "Deondre once stayed in my class until almost 7 at night getting ready for a test and then showed up the following morning at 6:30 for tutorials to make sure he did well. He got a 100 on the test... He is a symbol of what a student should be. I know he plays on the football team and works in the evening, yet he does nothing in school but succeed, showing that there are always a multitude of excuses for not doing things. but only one reason is necessary for doing something well." Deondre earned his nick-name "Straight A" from his dean Mrs. Griggs by earning straight A's his entire senior year. He also has all E's in conduct and near-perfect attendance.

Congratulations to Deondre on a very successful high school career and best wishes for continued success in the future.
WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL SEEKS PARENT INPUT REGARDING UNIFORMS FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR
The Westside Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) is an advisory board to the principal that is comprised of teachers, parents, administrators, and community leaders. The committee discusses various issues throughout the year and is presently exploring the issues related to our student dress code. Currently, there is a strong support among most members of the SDMC to implement a school uniform for the 2012-2013 school year. Please know that Westside believes important issues that impact the entire school community demand discussion and input by all. Our first method to collect information will be through surveys.

Three surveys have been created - one for parents, one for Westside staff, and one for current students. The included link takes you to a short survey that will enable our SDMC to gather input and hear your opinions. The included questions were generated primarily by the parent representatives and were shared beforehand with the entire SDMC.  We anticipate that some of you will have strong feelings one way or the other while others will be somewhere in the middle. Each opinion is important as this is something that would require full support once a decision is made. To be clear, the SDMC is an advisory board to the principal. Unless specified there is no "vote" being taken whereby the simple majority prevails. This survey, coupled with the staff and student surveys, will be influential. All of the results will come back to SDMC who may recommend a plan to be considered.

With the school year quickly coming to a close we ask that each Westside parent gives this short survey a few minutes of your time as we hope to have all of the data compiled by the end of the day on Friday, May 18. Please remember, this is a parent survey. There is a separate survey available for faculty/staff and one is being generated for students. Thanks again for taking a few minutes to participate.

Moss and Gray have both been invited to the New Balance High School Nationals Meet. Congratulations to our coaches and these hard-working athletes.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR RICHARD A. SCOTT MUSICIAN DEVELOPMENT AWARD
The Music Boosters honors Mr. Richard Scott each year by awarding two $1,000.00 scholarships for graduating seniors. The applicants must have participated in the music program at Westside all four years and plan on majoring or minoring in a music-related field. Students should also be in good standing. Please see the information sheet for more details.
