Six Student-Athletes
Sign Letters of Intent

Westside High School is proud to recognize the following athletes who have signed letters of intent for colleges throughout Texas and the United States. Although a few dozen of our athletes have committed verbally to a school or have decisions pending, the letters signed last week on Wedesnday, February 1 are binding; athletes must attend the school in order to receive financial aid, and NCAA rules forbid coaches from recruiting them further. Our congratulations go out to these athletes for their dedication and hard work and we wish them the best in college.

Join Westside's Newest Organization
Color Guard

The Color Guard is well on it's way to becoming the newest addition to Westside's tradition of excellence. Movement, Flag, and Rifle training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Commons from 5:00-6:30.  It's definitely not too late to join!  Please come out and see if the Westside Color Guard is for you.  Come by the Band Hall at lunch for more information from Mrs. Clyburn.

Free SAT and
ACT Tutorials

If you are taking the ACT this spring, make plans to take advantage of free tutorial sessions to get you ready for the big day! There is one remaining date on Wednesday, Feb 8th. The session runs from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM and will take place in N133. Please see Ms. Hagans with any questions.

Mondays with
McDonough

The first Mondays with McDonough was held today in S100 during lunch. The topic for this chat was the current Westside dress code. The small but spirited group was made up of both freshman and seniors so the spectrum of opinion was evident. Ideas were shared regarding the need for a dress code, issues with enforcement, and thoughts on what if any changes could help. Look for more of these open chats with Principal McDonough on this same topic as well as many others.

Bullying Prevention and Intervention Speaker
Houston ISD's Counseling and Guidance Services presents Donna Clark Love
on Bullying Prevention and Intervention. This presentation is part of Anti-Bullying and Awareness Week which takes place February 6-10th.

The presentation will take place on Monday, February 6th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Hattie Mae White in the Board Room. Seating is limited to 300.
ABC's First Annual Golf Tournament
Come and join us for a fun round of golf, followed by awards, a fiesta dinner and a lively auction! All of the proceeds will benefit Westside's athletes through ABC's General Fund.  The tournament is on Wednesday, February 29th. You can also access the information flyer and registration form on our website. We are looking forward to a fantastic time! Hope to see you there!
Juniors - It's
SAT Time!

SAT time is approaching for our juniors. HISD has once again committed time and resources to administer a live SAT exam during the school day on Tuesday, March 20th. In addition to that, this year they have paid for every 11th grader to have access to an online SAT prep course. Last week juniors received an SAT workbook with a sticker in the upper right hand corner with the code for the online SAT prep class.

More information about other SAT camps and courses will be forthcoming as we near the March 20 administration. This is an exciting opportunity for our 11th graders and something that sets the district apart from others across the country. Good luck!

STAAR Presentation By HISD on Feb 16
Join us for a STAAR info session on Feb. 16th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. The meeting will take place at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center Board Auditorium.

Get the latest updates on the state's new  accountability test. Our panel of experts is ready to take all of your questions. Plus, we will present information on how the test will affect elementary, middle, and high school students, and will explain how the district is implementing the new requirements.

If you have questions about STAAR, you can ask them in person or via email before the event: STAAR@houstonisd.org.

NORTH TWO STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - HARLIN OH

The Westside High School Applied Science and Health Professions Academy (N2) would like to recognize Harlin Oh for all of her accomplishments throughout the past four years. Harlin hit the ground running when she arrived on our campus as a freshman. She quickly got involved in a plethora of activities. To start, Harlin joined the soccer team because soccer is one of her passions. She has participated on the soccer team all four years and she is currently a starter on Westside High School's Varsity Soccer team. Despite the hours spent after school honing her soccer skills, she still finds time for another passion of hers - Speech and Debate. She currently serves as the president of the club and last summer she had the opportunity to attend an intensive four-week debate program at Dartmouth Debate Institute focused on policy debate. According to Harlin, "I was given the opportunity to experience college life while meeting students from across the country, who were also interested in policy debate." As you can see, Harlin has already got her eyes set on the experiences and opportunities that await her in college. We know she'll be successful, because on top of her commitments to the two demanding pursuits of soccer and debate, Harlin has also been a member of National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Asian Honor Society, and Ecology Club. Outside of school, she is very active in her church as a member of the choir and as an alter server. For community service, Harlin has volunteered in many ways including serving as a tutor for Korean students whose second language is English.

Beyond showing how much one can do at Westside, Harlin Oh also exemplifies student leadership. She was Vice President of the student body as a junior and this year Harlin is the President of her senior class. In these positions, Harlin has had the opportunity to demonstrate her leadership skills while listening to her classmates and being the voice for her class to administration.

Harlin's experience as a leader led to a summer internship position where she worked in Judge Jeff Bohm's office. In this internship, Harlin worked with three law clerks who had each finished law school and passed the Texas Bar exam. Under the supervision of the law clerks, Harlin helped revise the judge's memorandum opinions and court decisions. This opportunity has further inspired Harlin to ultimately pursue a degree in law.

Harlin is a true asset to Westside High School. She is ranked very near the top of her class and she is an AP Scholar with Distinction. At this time, Harlin is eagerly awaiting admissions decisions from high caliber schools like Dartmouth, Cornell, Rice, Penn, Yale, University of Michigan, and Northwestern. There is no doubt that Harlin Oh will be a huge success on the campus of whichever university she ultimately selects. She truly embodies all that a student can pursue and achieve here at Westside, and we are proud to put the Student Spotlight on her this week.

WRESTLING TEAM CLAIMS 12TH STRIGHT DISTRICT TITLE AND ADVANCES

Congratulations to Coach Froehlich and his mighty Westside Varsity Boys Wrestling Team, which clinched its 12th straight District 23-5A Varsity Wrestling Championship title this past Thursday while qualifying 13 of its 14 wrestlers for the Region III Tournament. The Varsity Girls Wrestling Team will advance two wrestlers as well.

The Westside men captured 8 gold medals, 4 silvers and 2 bronze on their way to a 264.5 point team victory over second place
Sam Houston High School with 148 points. Congratulations to our District Champions Adam Ortega (113), Sean Lofgren (126), Xavier Hall (145), Bryan Kurisko (160), Daniel Tittle (170), Steven Holman (182), Cole Jongebloed (195), and Ashton Gutierrez (220). Second place medals were claimed by Neiman Mitchell (106), Joe Koutani (132), Lucas Bazemore (138), and Raymond James. These 12 wrestlers now advance to compete in the UIL Region III Tournament this weekend. Kudos to Adam Smith (120) and Angel Buenrostro (285) for a third place finish. Angel also won his wrestle back and the opportunity to compete with the other 12 wrestlers this coming weekend.

Our Varsity Girls Wrestling Team also advances wrestlers to this weekend's regional competition. Congratulations and good luck to our District Champion Precila Matar (148) and District Runner-up Catherine Estell (185) as they prepare for this weekend.

Best of luck to Coach Froehlich, Coach Baker and our entire WHS Wolves Wrestling Team as they go head to head with the region's best this Friday and Saturday, February 10th and 11th, at the Merrell Center in Katy.

8TH GRADE PARENT MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY

Course selection time is upon us and over the next couple of weeks our zoned 8th grade students will be selecting their courses for next year. It's very important to get off on the right foot with the right courses.

Zoned families are invited to attend the annual 8th Grade Parent Meeting this Wednesday, February 8th at 6:30 PM in the Mini-Theatre. Find out how the course selection process works and which courses are best for your child. Principal Mr. Michael McDonough and other Westside administrators will be present to walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have. Topics covered will include: Small Learning Communities/Dean Concept, Graduation Requirements, Selecting Courses, GT, Magnet, Course Levels, Try-Out Information, and more.

If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at nstockma@houstonisd.org .

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!" Those words from the opening song pretty much describe A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Kyriakos Galiotos)as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Kurt Hummel, Emerald Lewis, and Akash Ghosal, keep the slapstick and the patter perking.  The cast also includes Matt Growbowski and Lydia Nassab as love-struck innocents; Emma Center, Zeynep Turnali, Walker Metkoyo, Morgan Brochu, Maddie Gallant, Anais Saenz, Juliette Mudd, and Natalie Rial as beautiful courtesans; Joel Aguilera, Godswill Muofhe, Serae Halliburton and Elvira Norwoah as ground-breaking soldiers; and Briana Argulles with Hannah Lykins and Natalie Jamarrilo as comical, befuddled old women.

Make plans to attend the show on Thursday, February 9th or Friday, February 10th. Tickets are available at the Black Box or from Theatre students for $5 in advance. Tickets can also be purchased for $7 at the door. This is one you definitely won't want to miss!
ADRIENNE MILLER WEARS ANOTHER HAT - THIS TIME IT'S A CROWN

As if wearing the hat of Westside High School Student Body President and National Honor Society Co- President isn't enough, now Adrienne Miller wears a crown! On Saturday, January 28th, Adrienne Miller won the coveted title of Miss Top Teen for the Houston Chapter of Top Teens of America. This position is won through merit, active participation in the organization, and fundraising. A portion of the funds raised by each teen will go towards a personal scholarship.

Top Teens of America (TTA) is a youth organization whose purpose is to encourage high academic scholarship; develop social graces, leadership and fellowship abilities; develop pride in self, home and community; encourage participation in workshops which address current trends; work collaboratively with other organizations to reach mutual goals; develop deep concerns for senior citizens, status of women, community beautification and community partnerships; and encourage appreciation for ethnic and cultural heritage. Top Teen projects include participation in the NAACP, Sickle Cell Awareness and Healthy Choices conference, the UNCF, March of Dimes, National Council of Negro Women, mentoring, and the TLOD literacy program just to name a few.

Adrienne has been a member of Top Teens for the past five years. She is currently serving in the capacity of Status of Women chair and has recently been voted by TLOD Houston chapter as the 2012 Most Outstanding Top Teen. In her new role as Miss Top Teen, Adrienne will represent the largest chapter in the nation, serving the Area One region which is comprised of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Congratulations to Adrienne. We know you'll represent Top Teens of America well.

TEEN TRUTH LIVE COMING TO WESTSIDE

On Wednesday, February 15, 2012 Westside High School, through the generous financial support of the Westside PTO, will be presenting TEEN TRUTH LIVE, an interactive, multi-media presentation that has been organized and run by the students of Westside. TEEN TRUTH LIVE incorporates motivational speeches with an award-winning, student filmed 22-minute video that tackles the issues of body image.

TEEN TRUTH LIVE was created with a simple but powerful goal in mind: to give students a voice and empower them to make a difference. This will provide students with a critical understanding of how body image affects many students' outlook on their self-esteem. This presentation is exclusively for freshmen and sophomores and will take place during your child's 3rd or 5th period. The 9th and 10th grade girls will participate during 3rd period, and the 9th and 10th grade boys will participate during 5th period.

The purpose of this assembly is to challenge the audience to have a positive impact on themselves and others every day in order to make their school and the community a safer and healthier place.
BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE WINS BIG OVER PEARLAND

The Westside Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team began their season with a victory against Pearland Friday night, February 3rd with a score of 16-2.  Junior midfielder Tony Nguyen scored the first goal of the game to set the pace for an exciting night and followed up with another goal later in the game.  In the second quarter senior midfielder Dustin Parffrey scored two goals and later in the game two assists.  Guillermo Arriaga and Trent Cuhel, both junior midfielders, along with Dylan Lemmon, a sophomore midfielder, each scored one goal.  Ayham Duwaji, senior attackman, was the high scorer of the game with 6 goals.   With the assistance of the goalies, Ryan Fennell and Colin Panyard, and the defenders, Brandon Onstott, Pouri Sarvi, and Chuck Prokop, Westside kept Pearland from scoring.  Come out and support our boys on Thursday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m. in their game against Katy High School at the Firethorne field.  Many thanks to Coach Mackenzie, Coach Michael and Coach Onstott for their hard work and dedication to the team.
