EAST TWO STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - LAUREN CLEMONS
| |

This week Westside's Student Spotlight falls on a freshman who is already making her mark. Recently named Miss Black Texas USA Talented Teen, Lauren Clemons is a role model for many. Not only is she beautiful inside and out, but she is helping other young girls understand they are beautiful too. Lauren plans to implement her platform "You are Beautiful" by raising the self-esteem of girls through speaking to groups who are dealing with depression and low self-esteem. She hopes to help them find positive ways to cope with their life issues by encouraging self-expression through fine arts. At Westside, Lauren participates in French Honor Society and is a member of the Black Student Union. She was recently selected to perform in Hiphopoly and plans on auditioning for Pride this spring. This only scratches the surface of her many activities and talents. Outside of Westside she is very active in numerous organizations such as Girls Scouts of America, King's Dance Center, and Kids in Dance. She is an avid dancer and budding actress, having performed with the Ensemble Theatre in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown and the Alley Theatre in A Christmas Carol. She is an active member of Mount Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, where she currently sings with the youth choir and dances on the Praise Team. Even though Lauren is a freshmen, she has already set high goals for her future and is on the way to achieving them. Lauren plans on majoring in Arts Communication at Clark Atlanta University. Her long-term goal is to be a journalist who travels worldwide as a correspondent. By that point, she also hopes she'll be helping young ladies worldwide. Although Lauren may have a busy schedule ahead, she still makes time for friends, family, and, of course, homework. We look forward to watching Lauren grow as a leader and role model during her time at Westside and beyond.

WESTSIDE HAS BEST OF SHOW
| |

Westside artist Christina Seo's months of hard work is paying off. Her art piece (photo above) was just selected as Best in Show for HISD in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's Art Contest. Only one high school student per district has the honor of being selected as Best of Show so this is a huge achievement. Christina's art will now be eligible to win scholarship money and will possibly be entered into the auction. Additional awards will be announced on March 3 at a special awards presentation.
Christina spent months working on her piece. The majority of the piece was created using color pencil while the black cow was drawn with pen and the white cow had some watercolor added to it. One thing that makes the artwork so interesting is the use of repeated triangle composition. The triangular composition has been used in art since the Renaissance.
Although Christina studies art at Westside as well as at a private art school, she has only been formally studying art for the past year. Christina decided to explore the area of drawing because she is interested in game design and strong drawing skills are a necessity in this career area. When she graduates next year she'd like to attend Full Sail University, an Award-Winning School for Entertainment Media, where she will major in Game Design.

WESTSIDE PARTICIPATES IN CHEVRON HOUSTON MARATHON AND ARAMCO HOUSTON HALF MARATHON
| |

Westside teachers and students participated in the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon in various ways from running to cheering to hydrating the runners.
Our very own Kate Taylor stood out from the pack. With a time of 1:35:06 she placed first in her age group, 123rd in the female category and 540th overall out of over 9000 runners! Other half marathon runners included Ms. Lori Lambropoulos and Mr. Cedric French. Ms. Kristen Dobbs finished the Houston's full marathon for the second year! Congratulations to our runners!
On the sidelines Westside has approximately twenty NHS students who joined Ms. Donna Patch handing out water, Gatorade, and words of encouragement. They kept mile 21.5 lively and kept the runners going as they neared the tail end of the run.

WESTSIDE THEATRE PRESENTS ADDING MACHINE - JANUARY 19-21
| | |
The Westside Theatre Production Company presents The Adding Machine, by Elmer Rice, Thursday-Saturday, January 19-21, at 7:00 pm in the Black Box.
The Adding Machine is a funny and slightly nightmarish look at advancing technology and its effect on human relationships. The Adding Machine is the story of Mr. Zero (MC Anassi), an employee at a corporate department store, whose job it is to add columns of sales figures. Mr. Zero, who has been in the same job for 25 years, is expecting a promotion from his boss (Katie Olivier), but instead gets fired and replaced by an adding machine. He becomes so upset that he murders his boss. Mr. Zero is the perfect anti-hero - someone who is unable to understand how his inability to learn from his own mistakes results in many negative consequences over the course of his life. From his marriage to a soul-killing wife (Bailey Self), to his inability to declare his love for a co-worker (Elizabeth Malone), Mr. Zero's life consists of a litany of missed opportunities and disappointments that continues into his strange and disorienting afterlife.
Tickets are $5 pre-sale and can be purchased in the Black Box starting on January 11th. They will be $7 at the door. Come enjoy the drama of this awesome theatre production and help support our school! Please call 281-920-8054 for ticket information.
