Food for Thought...

Greetings!

Welcome Friends & Supporters!

I wonder sometimes if donors to the Food Bank Coalition know how far their generosity goes. I don't mean the fact that we can provide 7 nutritious meals for a dollar, which makes a donation to the Food Bank a powerful weapon in the battle against hunger. I'm thinking about the more subtle but powerful changes it makes in a person's life who is on the receiving end of good, healthy food. When a person is homeless, or when parents are unable to provide food for their family, caring is not taken for granted. They are moved and encouraged by the compassion of others whom they don't even know. Giving without judging is nothing short of emotional healing and empowerment, the beginnings of hope and change. What you may not always think about is that you impart courage as well. Together we can overcome any adversity. In these days of economic uncertainty, it takes courage to donate to help others. The recent effort on the part of thousands in our county to help us win a Toyota was just the latest expression of a caring community.  While we didn't win the car, we felt like winners, and hope that every person who voted felt that way, too.  Thank you for so generously making it possible for us to say that we've been providing hope for over twenty years.  Carl

Ending Hunger One Step at a Time!
Hunger Walk - Morro Bay

Have you registered for the 3rd annual Hunger Walk of  San Luis Obispo County. This year's walk will  take place on Sunday,  September 25th at 2:00 PM at  eight convenient sites across  the county.  Check-in begins at 1:00 PM; walk begins promptly at 2:00 PM. Please register soon to start collecting sponsors.

The Food Bank is inviting the public to enjoy a one-mile walk to raise needed funds to help feed the hungry of SLO County. Money raised will benefit food programs and member agencies of the Food Bank representing SLO County's food pantries, feeding programs, homeless shelters, rehabilitation centers and soup kitchens. The Hunger Walk is an opportunity for agencies to build financial support for their food pantries and feeding programs. With your pledge of support, agencies will have more food to feed more people in need.

4-H Member Donates SteerMid State Fair

Christine Allen, age 17 daughter of Andrew & Debbie Allen of Edna Valley raised and donated a steer to the Food Bank at this years California Mid State Fair. Christine raised almost $5,000 in donations to give to the Food Bank to purchase and pay for the processing.  To top it off, she won Champion English Breed!  This is the fourth year the Allen family children have raised animals for the Food Bank and each year they encourage others to do the same. The steer will provide a great source of protein for our food distributions.  Thank you for your continued support!

Fresno Youth Day

The Fresno Latter Day Saints Youth Group traveled to SLO County for their annual summer conference. This year the group participated in a scavenger hunt collecting needed items and monetary donations for the Food Bank. The group of over 100 children and parents walked the neighborhoods of Paso Robles. After 2 hours of fun in the sun the group returned with a total of 892 lbs. of food and $825. Thank you for giving back to our community!

Hunger & Your Health

Did you know that after children, seniors are the largest group of individual we serve? Seniors are especially vulnerable because they live on a fixed income. In 2009 a study conducted by the Action for Healthy Communities, determined that 36% of seniors in our county struggle to put food on the table.  Seniors play an important role in our community; 9 out of 10 seniors donate to non-profits and 2 out of 5 volunteer. One of our agency partners, Senior Nutrition deliver meals to seniors in need. This is just one example of the effort to end hunger in the senior community.

Good nutrition is essential for effective learning every day, all year long. Just as learning doesn't end when school lets out, neither does the need for proper nutrition. Children who aren't hungry learn better, act better and feel better. The ... Continue reading →...»
