Meeting Highlights - August 13
Board plans for summer 2013 construction projects
The Board of Education reviewed proposals for various construction projects intended for the summer of 2013. These recommendations were first presented to the Board Facilities Committee on August 7, and then brought to the Board as a whole for further discussion on August 13.
As part of the annual planning process, school administrators prioritize facility improvements and maintenance projects to be completed within each school's budget allocation for small building projects. GBN is proposing the following projects for summer 2013: Science classroom window installation; Main Gym painting; painting of Green and Yellow Block near the library; and Center for Performing Arts stage wood trim repairs. These projects total $58,000. The majority remainder of its budget allocation will be used to support the turf field installation scheduled at GBN for next summer. GBS is proposing one larger project utilizing its entire allocation, which targets an expansion of the maintenance department area.
The Board also considered roofing and masonry ($18,000) for GBS and paving, path and fencing at both schools ($459,600). In addition, the final installment of the District's Build American Bonds totaling $1.3 million must be spent by the summer of 2013. These funds must be used for Life Safety and Infrastructure projects. At GBN, items include Main Gym bleacher replacement and floor refinishing, and as part of the turf field project, track replacement and water detention expansion. For GBS, items include a fire panel upgrade, new Main Gym lighting and ceiling painting, and replacement of proscenium lighting in the auditorium.
The Board is expected to vote on these proposals at its next regular scheduled meeting on Monday, August 27.
