Glenbrooks embrace technology, use as teaching tool
As technology continues to rapidly evolve, so, too, must the classroom experience for a 21st century high school student.
From Facebook to Twitter and the tools of Google, instructors at both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools have embraced these applications as teaching resources that have enhanced the learning experience.

"We used to have to send an email out to numerous students for editing purposes, and then we'd get back multiple copies with conflicting suggestions," said senior Stella Tu, who works on GBN's student newspaper The Torch. "Now, we can use Google Docs to share the same document among many editors."
Recently, Instructional Technology Coordinators Ryan Bretag (GBN) and David Jakes (GBS) invited students and staff to demonstrate to the Board of Education how tools such as Google Apps, Moodle, and Twitter are utilized.
By utilizing such applications, it has not only allowed for greater efficiency but also expanded the classroom beyond the high school walls. Students from GBS AP Spanish helped demonstrate this through the use of Google Apps for Education, which provides document sharing tools. "With Google Docs, you can collaborate with anyone, at anytime, from anywhere," said senior Gabriela Chuchro.
GBS physics students also showed how teachers are using an online tool called Moodle to offer assignments and calendars. "Moodle allows teachers to post an interactive calendar, so if a student misses class, they know the assignments," said junior Ethan Boner. "If you miss school, you might not have access to your materials, but links are provided so you can still complete the assignments from home." At Glenbrook North, Teaching Internship and Seminar is the third level of child development classes. Teacher Katie Jones uses Twitter to teach her students how to think publicly, develop their professional identity and connect with educators in a more global fashion.
Because students are often out working in multiple schools with different grade levels, Twitter has also served as a communication channel to share their experiences with each other. Check out their works on Twitter: #gbnfuted.
"I wanted students to follow each other's work and also those of field experts," Jones said. "They have learned to speak in public in a professional manner through Twitter." Also at GBN, students in AP US History class use Google Sites, a website template that serves as a collaborative work space. They use this method to prepare for the AP test. Each student posts outlines and has roles and responsibilities regarding the website. "It fosters a learning community among my peers and I," said junior Sam Aber.

Limited parking for graduation
Parking at this year's graduation will be limited due to ongoing construction near the ceremony site.
The ceremonies will again take place at the Rosemont Theatre, which has been newly named the Akoo Theatre at Rosemont located at 5400 N. River Road in Rosemont. A shopping mall is being built next to the theater, and its construction is severely limiting parking.
Only 500 parking spaces will available in the lot, as compared to 1,400 spaces last year. Parents are advised to car pool as much as possible and have their graduate ride with them. Students need to be at the theater by 12:15 p.m., so parents traveling with them will arrive well ahead of the 1:30 p.m. processional.
There is another option to park at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center Parking Garage. It is located a half block north of the theater on the west side of River Road at 9500 Williams St. It has a flat fee of $13. Please allow at least 15 minutes additional time to accommodate finding a spot and walking to the theater.

High schools come together for Glenbrook musical 'Phantom of the Opera'
From an operatic voice that is college bound, to a football star turned serious performer, and juggler into haunting phantom, this year's cast of the Glenbrook musical Phantom of the Opera features an eclectic mix of talent and diversity.
As part of a long standing tradition in District 225, the two high schools of Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South will again come together for the joint production. Auditions were held earlier this school year, and rehearsals began in March (click here for full cast list).
Phantom premiered in 1986 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical. It was later adapted as a major motion picture, where it went on to gross over $150 million worldwide.
The musical will be held at GBN. Tickets are $13 and available for purchase either online or in person at GBN. Sell out crowds are expected, so advance ticket purchases are encouraged. The musical will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2 through Saturday, May 5 in the Sheely Center for Performing Arts.
For ticket information, call Suzan Maddox at 847-509-2671 or go to www.seatyourself.biz/gbn.

GBS names new boys' head basketball coach
Glenbrook South named Ben Widner the new head boys' basketball coach, beginning in the 2012-13 season. Widner has been a social studies teacher at GBS since 2000. He has served as the assistant varsity coach for eight seasons and the freshman coach for four seasons.
"The basketball program at South has developed young men so well in terms of their character, values and work ethic," said Widner. "I coached many of these athletes as freshman so I'm excited to work with the talent I know we will have on the team. I'm also looking forward to getting to know the players who I haven't worked with yet."
Widner will be busy preparing for the basketball season as early as this summer. He plans to host open gyms, conditioning, and workout regiments in the fitness center. Summer camps and leagues will also be offered for students.
"We think the program will be in great hands with Coach Widner taking over," said Athletic Director Steve Rockrohr. "He's a basketball guy and he knows how to relate to the kids. We look forward to many great years."

Each month, this section will feature a different article that ran in Glenbrook South's student-run newspaper The Oracle, and, occasionally, other student-produced work. A new edition of The Oracle is distributed approximately every five weeks and can be found in newsstands throughout the school. It is also mailed to all Parents' Association members. This month's article is written by staff reporter Richard Pearl.
Galperin and Brown candidates for Presidential Scholars
Seniors Michael Galperin and Thomas Brown have been chosen as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, taking place in Washington D.C. this summer.

The U.S Presidential Scholars Program is a program that was created in 1964 by executive order of President Lyndon B. Johnson to recognize and honor graduating high school seniors who have particularly excelled in their education.
"They give you an all expenses trip to Washington D.C and you get to meet President Obama," Galperin said. "You are just kind of commended for your achievements."

The Glenbrooks partner with District 214 on technology disaster recovery plan
On April 9, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education considered a technology disaster recovery plan that would provide a backup to district resources in the case of an outage or emergency. Chief Technology Officer Marcus Thimm outlined a program that would connect the Glenbrooks with Arlington Heights Township High School District 214 through a direct fiber link."By collaborating with other organizations in our area, we build internet capacity, bandwidth, and redundancies," said Thimm. "These measures will assist us during potential power outages, natural disasters, emergency situations, and also in our daily efforts."To read more about the disaster recovery plan, click here.

District reviews past, present and future budget reductions
At the meeting on Monday, April 23, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education reviewed a recommendation from the administration for a Budget Reduction Plan focusing on decreasing ongoing expenditures. Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs Hillarie Siena provided a report of past budget reductions, and those that are being considered for the next two school years.
"The district will continue to face financial challenges due to an unstable economy and projected student enrollment growth," said Siena. "Continuing a budget reduction plan that began in 2010 is a proactive way for maintaining financial stability over the next two years."
District 225 remains firmly committed to maintaining quality programs and opportunities at a reasonable cost. Recent budget reduction strategies have saved the district approximately $2.2 million since 2010. This was accomplished by increasing student fees, cutting energy costs, charging service fees for credit card transactions, renegotiating vendor services contacts, and decreasing building and technology budgets. The district has also reduced overall staffing levels through attrition.
