Glenbrooks embrace technology, use as teaching tool
As technology continues to rapidly evolve, so, too, must the classroom experience for a 21st century high school student.
From Facebook to Twitter and the tools of Google, instructors at both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools have embraced these applications as teaching resources to enhance the learning experience.

"We used to have to send an email out to numerous students for editing purposes, and then we'd get back multiple copies with conflicting suggestions," said senior Stella Tu, who works on GBN's student newspaper The Torch. "Now, we can use Google Docs to share the same document among many editors."
Recently, Instructional Technology Coordinators Ryan Bretag (GBN) and David Jakes (GBS) invited students and staff to demonstrate to the Board of Education how tools such as Google Apps, Moodle, and Twitter are utilized.
By utilizing such applications, it has not only allowed for greater efficiency but also expanded the classroom beyond the high school walls. Students from GBS AP Spanish helped demonstrate this through the use of Google Apps for Education, which provides document sharing tools. "With Google Docs, you can collaborate with anyone, at anytime, from anywhere," said senior Gabriela Chuchro.
GBS physics students also showed how teachers are using an online tool called Moodle to offer assignments and calendars.
"Moodle allows teachers to post an interactive calendar, so if a student misses class, they know the assignments," said junior Ethan Boner. "If you miss school, you might not have access to your materials, but links are provided so you can still complete the assignments from home." At Glenbrook North, Teaching Internship and Seminar is the third level of child development classes. Teacher Katie Jones uses Twitter to teach her students how to think publicly, develop their professional identity and connect with educators in a more global fashion.
Because students are often out working in multiple schools with different grade levels, Twitter has also served as a communication channel to share their experiences with each other. Check out their works on Twitter: #gbnfuted.
"I wanted students to follow each other's work and also those of field experts," Jones said. "They have learned to speak in public in a professional manner through Twitter." Also at GBN, students in AP US History class use Google Sites, a website template that serves as a collaborative work space. They use this method to prepare for the AP test. Each student posts outlines and has roles and responsibilities regarding the website. "It fosters a learning community among my peers and I," said junior Sam Aber.

High schools come together for Glenbrook musical 'Phantom of the Opera'
From an operatic voice that is college bound, to a football star turned serious performer, and juggler into haunting phantom, this year's cast of the Glenbrook musical Phantom of the Opera features an eclectic mix of talent and diversity.
As part of a long standing tradition in District 225, the two high schools of Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South will again come together for the joint production. Auditions were held earlier this school year, and rehearsals began in March (click here for full cast list).
Phantom premiered in 1986 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical. It was later adapted as a major motion picture, where it went on to gross over $150 million worldwide.
The musical will be held at GBN. Tickets are $13 and available for purchase either online or in person at GBN. Sell out crowds are expected, so advance ticket purchases are encouraged. The musical will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2 through Saturday, May 5 in the Sheely Center for Performing Arts.

Students raise funds for local charity
Glenbrook North's 19th annual Radio-thon resulted in close to $5,000 of charitable donations that will benefit the Emily Dorfman Foundation - a Northbrook based charity that raises funds for pediatric medical research and supportive services projects. On April 5, radio students took to the airwaves for 10 hours in hopes of raising awareness and funds. The radio-thon began at 2 p.m. and ran until 12 a.m. This was the 19th year for the event, and in past years students have raised more than $115,000 for cancer research.
The Emily Dorfman Foundation was established in 1994 in memory of Beth and Steve Dorfman's 3-year-old daughter Emily, who lost an 11-month battle against an inoperable brainstem tumor. For more information, go to www.emilydorfman.org.

Students attempt to implement 'Safe Rides'
After going to school all day, having Orchesis Show rehearsals until 8:30 p.m., then going straight to dance until 9:30 p.m., junior Emily Landau decided she was going to do research instead of relaxing. She had heard about a program that she said would be a "pretty easy" way to prevent intoxicated driving accidents, and is currently working to get it approved in the Glenbrook North community. Landau and junior Jamie Cohen are seeking to start a program called Safe Rides at GBN. The program is based off a program run by New Trier Township students for New Trier students. The NT program allows students who do not have a ride home to call a Safe Rides hotline to be picked up by another New Trier student. A student driver, who has been through the training program and has had a license for at least a year, comes and picks up the student and takes him or her home. The student being driven could be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or just sober and not have a ride home. To read more about Safe Rides, click here.

District reviews past, present and future budget reductions
At the meeting on Monday, April 23, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education reviewed a recommendation from the administration for a Budget Reduction Plan focusing on decreasing ongoing expenditures.
Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs Hillarie Siena provided a report of past budget reductions, and those that are being considered for the next two school years.
"The district will continue to face financial challenges due to an unstable economy and projected student enrollment growth," said Siena. "Continuing a budget reduction plan that began in 2010 is a proactive way for maintaining financial stability over the next two years."
District 225 remains firmly committed to maintaining quality programs and opportunities at a reasonable cost. Recent budget reduction strategies have saved the district approximately $2.2 million since 2010. This was accomplished by increasing student fees, cutting energy costs, charging service fees for credit card transactions, renegotiating vendor services contacts, and decreasing building and technology budgets. The district has also reduced overall staffing levels through attrition.
