GBN brings new meaning to classroom experience

It won't just be teachers at the head of the class at Glenbrook North on March 14.

For one day, officials at GBN are closing the textbooks on traditional lesson plans and instead focusing on the social emotional side of learning in the form of Spartans Connect.

The purpose of the all-day workshop is to celebrate the interests, hobbies and passions of the Spartan community.  Students, teachers, staff, parents, local residents and business leaders will host more than 80 sessions that touch on a myriad of subjects and interests.

"This event gives students the chance to explore new learning opportunities or connect around common passions with their peers and members of the community," said Ryan Bretag, coordinator of instructional technology for Glenbrook North. Bretag is who helped organize Spartans Connect. "By bringing our students together in this way, it really strengthens our relationship as Spartans."

50 years of memories: GBS celebrates success, honors history

It was a celebration 50 years in the making on February 25, as former and current students and staff, alumni, community leaders and parents filed into the fieldhouse at Glenbrook South.

"I can't thank you enough for being here with us on this special, great occasion. Your presence is appreciated," said GBS Principal Brian Wegley as he welcomed the room of more than 1,400 guests. "And I can't think that this type of event could occur at many high schools, and I'm so proud that it's occurring here at Glenbrook South High School."

The day kicked off with the afternoon gala, which featured a lunch and speeches from notable community leaders such as U.S. Congressman Robert Dold and State Representative Daniel Biss.  Student Council President Merrick Topping also led the audience in the singing of "Happy Birthday GBS" and invited guests to release their balloons from the table in recognition.

GBN and GBS turf field bids come in under budget

The Board of Education reviewed the results of the formal bid process for the installation of turf fields at both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South.

If approved, turf installation is scheduled to occur at GBS this summer. The total cost for field installation at GBS is $1,524,416 and includes the turf/earthwork, paving/running track, and site utilities.  The district also bid out GBN's field surface in conjunction with the GBS surface in order to enjoy a cost savings, even though GBN will not receive its field until the summer of 2013. The cost for GBN's field surface is $471,622. Overall, the total bids came in $49,062 under budget. There is an additional $1 million in work for the field at GBN that will be bid out next year.

The estimated budget for the installation of artificial surfaces at both schools is $3.5 million and includes synthetic surfaces, irrigation systems, site work/drainage, running track replacement, water detention, and fees/contingencies. The project will be funded by a number of sources including: Athletic Booster Club Donations, Small Building Project allocations, School Community Donations, Capital Projects Reserve, and remaining Build America Bond Funds.

The principals have been meeting with potential advertisers in the community about renting space on the scoreboards.  The annual cost for an ad would likely be $5,000 and would require a five or 10-year commitment.  The district expects to collect $200,000 over five years or $400,000 over ten years to help fund the fields.

The district anticipates an increase in field usage from 4 percent to potentially 100 percent of allowable time* and would offer many more student groups the opportunity to utilize the outdoor facilities. The fields would be used for physical education classes, marching band, school and community athletic practices and competitions.

*Allowable time is defined as approximately ¾ of the calendar year and 3,500 total hours.
