GBN brings new meaning to classroom experience
It won't just be teachers at the head of the class at Glenbrook North on March 14. For one day, officials at GBN are closing the textbooks on traditional lesson plans and instead focusing on the social emotional side of learning in the form of Spartans Connect. | |
One of the classes offered during Spartans Connect will be "Get Fired Up!", a class that teaches students how to work with clay.
|
The purpose of the all-day workshop is to celebrate the interests, hobbies and passions of the Spartan community. Students, teachers, staff, parents, local residents and business leaders will host more than 80 sessions that touch on a myriad of subjects and interests. "This event gives students the chance to explore new learning opportunities or participate in classes that may not fit with their current schedules," said Ryan Bretag, coordinator of instructional technology for Glenbrook North. Bretag is who helped organize Spartans Connect. "By bringing our students together in this way, it really strengthens our relationship as a community." Some of the classes include Taking a Stand Against Bullying, Iron Chef Glenbrook North, Just Go! Travel the World on a Budget, Harry Potterology, Eastern Religion and Philosophy, Self Defense 101 and Discover Scuba Diving (click here to see the full course catalog). Even GBN Principal Paul Pryma will trade in his post as the school's top administrator for head of the class as part of "Pryma's Diners and Dives," a workshop about Chicago's tastiest eateries. "Hosting a workshop like this allows me the chance to get to know some of our students in a different way than as their principal. I also want to encourage them to explore neighborhoods beyond that of Northbrook and get to know what opportunities are available to them," Pryma said. This will be the first time Glenbrook North has hosted Spartans Connect. Students were able to register for their preferred classes in February. In addition to the available workshops, students can also attend a live performance in the Center for Performing Arts by "Jackpot Donnie," a well-known Chicago band featuring Glenbrook alumni. The sessions will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.

GBN alumni art show
For 20 years, students of Glenbrook North have left their artistic touches in the hallways, offices, library and other areas of the school. Now, those former students are invited back to celebrate their work. On Tuesday, March 13, GBN will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Permanent Art Collection. Through the vision of the Glenbrook Administration, officials have collected more than 100 pieces of artwork from past students that are on exhibit throughout the school.
All alumni artists are invited to attend the event, which will immediately follow a special exhibit of artwork from senior art students in ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography. The Senior Art Show will run from 3 to 5 p.m in the library.
The senior art students will serve as ambassadors and provide tours of the comprehensive collection from 5 to 7 p.m. All artists represented in the Glenbrook North High School Permanent Art Collection will receive a catalogue of the artwork at the reception.

Each month, this section will feature a different article that ran in Glenbrook North's student-run newspaper The Torch, and occasionally, other student-produced work. A new edition of The Torch is distributed approximately every month and can be found in newsstands throughout the school. This month's article is written by Features Editor Jess Hoffen. Christopoulos releases first single
As a little boy, junior Andrew Christopoulos would sit next to the piano in his family's living room and look up with interest as his father and uncle played. As Andrew began his first lesson, the role switched and it was his father, George Christopoulos, sitting in on his son's first lessons, taking notes so that he could help Andrew practice later.

Music was always present in Andrew's childhood. He grew up hearing stories about his father's experiences as a professional musician. Just like his father, as Andrew continued to grow, so did his involvement in music. In addition to the piano, he began playing the drums in fourth grade and in the beginning of sixth began drumming in the Axidents, a band he formed with a few friends.
However, during sixth grade, Andrew stopped playing the piano. He was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis.
