50 years of memories: GBS celebrates success, honors history
It was a celebration 50 years in the making on February 25, as former and current students and staff, alumni, community leaders and parents filed in to the fieldhouse at Glenbrook South.
Blue and gold balloons swayed from the tables as the chatter of past students and staffers reuniting circulated throughout the room. Everyone had come together for the 50th Anniversary Gala and Variety Show - an event meant to celebrate the school's achievements throughout the past five decades, relive old memories and bring together the Titan community. | |
Former GBS Principal David Smith, current GBS Principal Brian Wegley and Assistant Principal of Student Activities Jim Shellard open the Titan Time Sphere.
|
"I can't thank you enough for being here with us on this special, great occasion. Your presence is appreciated," said GBS Principal Brian Wegley as he welcomed the room of more than 1,400 guests. "And I can't think that this type of event could occur at many high schools, and I'm so proud that it's occurring here at Glenbrook South High School." The day kicked off with the afternoon gala, which featured a lunch and speeches from notable community leaders such as U.S. Congressman Robert Dold and State Representative Daniel Biss. Student Council President Merrick Topping also led the audience in the singing of "Happy Birthday GBS" and invited guests to release their balloons from the tables in recognition. Wegley also was joined by former GBS Principal David Smith in the opening of the Titan Time Sphere, which was sealed 25 years ago during the school's silver anniversary. Up to 100 items were housed in the time sphere including a warm-up basketball jacket from the 1960s, slide rule, an eight-track tape, girl's PE uniform and the 1984 US News & World Report magazine with Glenbrook South students on the cover for "great schools." Later that day, another time capsule was sealed that will be opened again in 2037. Again, 100 items were added - all with cultural significance or special meaning to the school such as a Daily Herald article about the 2011 Lip Dub video, GBS Grammy program from 2008, UGG Boots and a Mamma Glass DVD. Guests were also treated to a special Variety Show Gold performance, which featured more than 400 students and staff and 37 acts. Glenview Village President Kerry Cummings kicked off the show by presenting GBS with a special proclamation and recognition of the school's success throughout the years. "This was such an amazing collaboration amongst everyone in the Titan community," said Assistant Principal of Student Activities Jim Shellard, who helped organize the event. "Glenbrook South really is a school that allows students the opportunity to explore and cultivate their passions. The 50th Gala served as a nice reminder of the success our students have found throughout the years." |

Each month, this section will feature a different article that ran in Glenbrook South's student-run newspaper The Oracle, and occasionally, other student-produced work.
A new edition of The Oracle is distributed approximately every five weeks and can be found in newsstands throughout the school. It is also mailed to all Parents' Association members. This month's article is written by Co-Web Editor Bailey Monte. Man of 'hart': social worker connects to students
Stepping into this man's office, there are two things one would notice upon entering. First, there is a couch with plastic toys on the table next to it.

Next, one would notice this man's eccentricity, from his clogs to his sideburns. Even more striking, however, is his genuine excitement, which would cause one to wonder, "Does this guy work here?" Both his smile and inviting voice immediately put his students at ease, and many find themselves thankful that they wound up in this unique office.
According to social worker David Hartman, he has been at South for five years and he typically describes his job in one of two ways.
"It's my job to either help kids get better grades or it's my job to help kids enjoy school more," Hartman said. "Most kids who aren't enjoying school aren't getting good grades."
