GBN grad turns passion into profit
Allie Wright always had the itch to express herself creatively. But it wasn't until that itch became more of a kick that she found a way to make a career out of it.
 | |
Allie Wright, a GBN graduate, recently started her own shoe company.
|
A 2009 graduate of Glenbrook North High School, Wright is the brainchild behind Allie Bolton Kicks - an online shoe company that puts a funky, artistic spin on the plain white shoe.
Since its launch last summer, the aspiring fashionista has been overwhelmed with orders from people throughout the country looking to get their hands - or feet - on her hand-drawn creations.
"It is so flattering to see people walking around campus wearing my designs and knowing there are also people all over the country wearing my kicks," Wright said, who is now a junior at Illinois State University. Wright's fashion roots began early on at Glenbrook North. She signed up for several fashion design and art classes, and through the support of her teachers, particularly Family and Consumer Science Teacher Kathleen Mitchem, she started transforming her passion into real life creations. The idea for launching her own shoe company, though, came more by accident. "One of my best friends asked me to draw something on her plain white shoes. After seeing how excited she was about the shoes, I posted a picture of them online and was shocked at the overwhelming feedback I received," she said. Allie Bolton Kicks is named in part after her grandmother whose maiden name - Bolton - she shares as her middle name. Her grandmother passed away from lung cancer and Wright would like to help "kick cancer" by donating a portion of her sales to the American Cancer Society.

Senior creates Android app for GBN students
Senior Jonathan Osacky knew he wanted to make an original app that was not already on the Android market. After some thinking, he decided to make an app related to school.
"The way I thought about it was like, 'What would help me through GBN?'" said Jonathan Osacky, who recently created a school-related application for the Android market. "So my app helps me, as well as other people that use it."
Osacky published his first application on the Android market on Oct. 22.
Osacky said he has experimented with other projects including a circuit to charge his phone using a solar panel, but this is his first original application.
The app includes features such as a map of Glenbrook North with room numbers, the ability to type in your schedule and send it to your friends, access to all the GBN resources including HomeLogic and Moodle, and the option to view the different bell schedules.
