Spartans seek to share through new program at Glenbrook North

Glenbrook North is opening up its doors in a new way to members of the community as part of a program known as Spartans Share.

Held in most months throughout the school year, the program features a new staff member each session to share their life experience. The presentations will focus on a variety of different

events such travel, special conferences or interesting workshops.

"We have a phenomenal, dynamic faculty who engage in fascinating experiences.  It is so exciting to have a forum through which their experiences may be shared," said Nicole Scherr, one of the faculty members behind Spartans Share.

Science teacher Nathan Unterman kicked off the first session on November 14 and discussed his experiences at CERN last summer.

For nearly a month, Unterman joined 48 other teachers from 27 different countries in lectures, experiments, discussions, teacher projects and different excursions around Geneva, Switzerland.

The next Spartan Share will take place on February 15, in the GBN library, at 3:15 p.m.  It will feature Justin Gerbich and Rob Milkowski, who both visited various places in China as part of academic programs.

This event is open to the Glenbrook District 225 community and beyond.

Other faculty members behind Spartans Share include: Superintendent Mike Riggle, Unterman, Principal Paul Pryma, Associate Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Kris Frandson and Assistant Cindie Kozeluh.

Phantom premiered in 1986 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical.  It was later adapted as a major motion picture, where it went on to gross more than $150 million worldwide.

The director of the show is GBN Theatre Director Julie Ann Robinson.  Additional staff include: Chad Davidson (Music Director), Andy Wallace (Assistant Director), Joel Monaghan (Technical Director) and Kristin Wagner (Conductor) and Mike Tarjan (Producer).  Ticket information can be obtained by calling the GBN Student Activities office at (847) 509-2671.

GBN students learn about workplace challenges
With the help of some local professionals, students at Glenbrook North were able to learn first hand some of the difficult challenges they will face in the business world during a special presentation on Thursday, November 10.

Five members of the Rotary Club of Northbrook visited the school to talk about ethical problems in the workplace. The speakers shared real life examples of situations that arose at their own businesses, such as an employee stealing or using the Internet for personal use.

Students talked amongst themselves about how they would respond if they witnessed such an event before the speakers revealed how they handled the situation.

"We wanted students to hear real life examples of difficult situations that come up in the work place and relate that to what they have been learning in the classroom," said Career and Life Skills Instructional Supervisor Mary Kosirog.

GBN Food Drive
Glenbrook North junior Jessie Fisher helps organize food donations during the school's Food Drive held in November.

r from Goethe.

Additionally, Key Club is organizing the 2011 Holiday Gift Donor Program through Youth Services.  It is a program through the Youth Services of Glenview and Northbrook where the students create "wish lists" for the holidays.

Sports, clubs, and classrooms will be sponsoring 66 families in the Glenview/Northbrook community.

If anyone wishes to participate in either program, please contact Danielle Fluegge at (847) 509-2471.

GBN Student Spotlight

Each month, this section will feature a different article that ran in Glenbrook North's student-run newspaper The Torch. A new edition of the paper is distributed approximately every month and can be found in newsstands throughout the school. This month's article is written by Copy Editor Varsha John.

Band marches on to victory

Marching band makes history, goes undefeated

As far as drum major Jenna Mendelson can remember, the Glenbrook North vs. Maine West football game was the first time in four years that the student section sat down to listen to the marching band. Among the clapping at the end, the words "really good" and "so tale

nted" could be heard throughout the stands.

For Mendelson, "incredible" is the only word to describe this year's marching band.

Over the span of its undefeated season, the band won best in division awards at all three of its competitions. They also won nine awards in captions, categories the band is additionally judged on.

Marching band directors Mark Running and Richard Chapman choose to view "winning" in other terms.

"The only thing we can control is ourselves, so if we feel like we've done the best job that we can do, we've won," said Running. "The trophies are just an affirmation of that."
