GBS News Update

Science students tap into new technology to stuGBS Sciencedy cells

A recent science experiment turned into a live broadcast for students at Glenbrook South High School thanks to the introduction of some innovative technology.

During a classroom experiment earlier this year, students in Deborah Stein's biology class used cameras borrowed from the ASSET (Advancing Secondary Science Education through Tetrahymena) program based out of Cornell University.  Students used these laboratory modules to transfer microscopic images from their microscopes to a laptop screen.

Tetrahymena are single-celled organisms found swimming in quiet ponds and lakes that can move, eat, grow and mate. Using the ASSET modules, students could watch the organisms undergo phagocytosis; the process by which they ingest particles from their surroundings.

Students named National Merit semi-finalists

Seven Glenbrook South students have been named National Merit semi-finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

They include: Thomas B. Brown, Michael Galperin, Anna M. Hirsch, Connor J. Obrien, Thomas C. Pollick, Kyle J. Redden and Julia M. Steffen.

These academically talented students will continue on in the competition for 8,300 National Merit scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring.

About 1.5 million high school juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National merit Scholarship Program by taking a preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship qualifying test.

The nationwide pool of semi finalists represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Screens for Teens coming to GBS

On Wednesday, October 26 all Glenbrook South students will have the opportunity to participate in Screens for Teens -- a free cardiac screening offered by the Max Schewitz Foundation. The testing includes an EKG for all participants and an echocardiogram for certain students.

Every year, healthy young adults like 20-year-old Schewitz die from hidden heart conditions. His parents started the foundation after finding out that many life-threatening heart conditions are detectable and treatable.

Only students with written permission will be tested. A waiver and health history form should be returned in a closed or sealed enveloped no later than Friday, October 21 to the Nurse's Office. For more information, click here.

GBS also is in need of parent volunteers to help run the EKG screening in conjunction with the Max Schewitz Foundation. For more information on becoming a volunteer, click here.

High school prank turns into charitable effGBS Burger Dayort, unites schools

It started off as a simple prank.

Five students from Glenbrook North marched down to the McDonald's of Plaza Del Prado in Glenview loaded with dollar bills in anticipation of buying out the food chain's entire supply of hamburgers.

One hundred burgers later, the feat was proved impossible. Regardless, the five agreed this was a prank that needed to be passed on to future generations of students.

Eight years later Burger Day lives on, only it is has taken on a different mission - a mission that not only has united both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South, but surrounding high schools as well.

"During Burger Day 4 the owner of the McDonald's, Mark Freeman, contacted the students about turning their prank into charitable effort," said GBN junior Josh Tolmatsky. "He would donate the burgers and all proceeds would benefit Ronald McDonald charities. From that point on, it was a charity event that benefited it in one way or another."

Tolmatsky, along with fellow classmate Mike Kessler and Glenbrook South sophomores Johnny Cowhey and Evan Marinis, are the organizers of this year's Burger Day fundraiser.
