Glenbrook South H.S. | Connections

Wegley

 Dear Parent,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!  I extend a warm welcome to all who are part of the Glenbrook South family during Glenbrook South's 50th, year!

As we have prepared for our Titans Strike Gold celebrations this year, we are cognizant that tremendous resources in facilities and, most importantly, in people have defined this outstanding high school that we have now enjoyed for five decades.

Our educators are leaders in their field and support each student in their care. We earnestly invest in the education of each student to develop minds and passions, generously share our abilities, and embrace a culture of civility and involvement.  All are ingredients of Glenbrook South High School and essential for a meaningful and successful life.

Students at GBS continue to be extraordinary achievers. In 2011 they earned college credit for over 1100 AP exams, and students earned their highest average ACT score in our history -- 24.7.

You will find Glenbrook South to be a warm place of opportunity for all students.  I invite each of you to partner with us by becoming involved at GBS. Connections is a monthly newsletter designed to help keep you informed and the GBS website (http://www.glenbrook225.org/south/) serves as an additional avenue to help keep you up to date.

Thank you for your support; I look forward to seeing you throughout the year.  We are all in for a wonderful experience!

With Titan Pride,

Wegley Sig

For some Glenbrook students, it runs in the family

It was more than 30 years ago when Dorrine Murphy entered the halls of Glenbrook South High School as a nervous freshman who had just moved to the area and was without any of her childhood friends.

Quickly, though, she learned how to navigate the hallways and social circles. She made friends, was named homecoming queen and fell in love with her now husband who also shared the homecoming spotlight as king.

Now, it is her daughter, Breck's, turn to enter Glenbrook South. And with the start of school nearing, she can't help but hope for a high school experience similar to her mother's.

Habitat for Humanity
Students trade in summer vacation for charitable cause

For 80 Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high school students, this summer wasn't about family vacations, daily visits to the local pool or relaxing with friends.

It was about giving back.

As part of a District 225 summer school program linked with international non-profit Habitat for Humanity, groups of 20 students and four chaperones traveled to Lexington, Kentucky over the past few weeks to help build homes for families in need. The first group left in June, and the last remaining clusters of students returned in July.

 District 225 News Update

District announces new communication initiatives
Google calendars, Twitter and Facebook to launch

Last year, District 225 conducted a communications audit in an effort to improve its services to students, parents and the school community. The research findings supported numerous new initiatives including improved school calendars, websites, newsletters, and social media utilization.

Calendars

The new school year brings with it a new online calendar system that will provide students, parents, and the school community with an easy-to-use, interactive, downloadable format.  Google calendars are available for both school calendars and the district Board of Education meeting dates.

Users may subscribe to an entire calendar (e.g. All Student Activities) or just one event at a time (e.g. Homecoming).  Instructions on using Google calendars can be found here.

E-Newsletters

Connections will be emailed and posted online, instead of mailed to every household.

Parents will be automatically subscribed to receive new bulletins that will include Board of Education Highlights and District Updates. Parents may also receive the Connections from both high schools, if they so choose. For more information, go to the District's website and click on the link that reads, "Subscribe to e-Newsletters."

Social Media

Follow us on TwitterFind us on Facebook

Both high schools will launch Facebook pages and Twitter feeds to help share great news about our students, staff and community.  In addition, these venues will serve as another outlet for emergency school closing announcements. Find us on Twitter @Glenbrook_south and on Facebook at Glenbrook South High School.

News from the community

Road construction to begin near the high school

Parents and students of Glenbrook South High School may want to allot themselves some additional traveling time during the first two weeks of school due to construction along West Lake Avenue and Greenwood Road.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will be resurfacing West Lake Avenue from Pfingsten Road to Greenwood and on Greenwood from West Lake to just north of Bellwood Lane.

Construction could begin as early as the week of August 22nd, but an exact start date has not yet been set. The project is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

Chestnut Avenue Railroad Crossing Closure

Glenview officials have received word from Metra that the Chestnut Avenue railroad crossing just east of Lehigh Avenue is scheduled to be closed from Wednesday, August 31st, to September 6th or 7th. Metra crews intend to make repairs to the grade crossing.

Landwehr Road/Hospital Drive Work

Roadwork is also occurring on Landwehr Road and, according to the Village of Glenview, is projected to continue through October. This work narrows the road to one lane in each direction from the fire station to Winkelman Elementary. This means that southbound traffic attempting to turn left at Hospital Road will stop traffic.

Glenbrook Hospital is widening the pavement at Landwehr and Hospital Drive to accommodate a designated left turn lane for southbound Landwehr traffic. Traffic signals will also be installed at the Landwehr/Hospital Drive intersection.

Glenview remembers 9/11

The village of Glenview will host a commemorative ceremony from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 11 at Gallery Park, located at Patriot Boulevard and Chestnut Avenue.

For more information on the event, go to glenviewremembers911.com.

This publication will be sent monthly to every parent/guardian email on file at the high school.  In addition, the district will also send out a Board of Education summary after each meeting. While we hope our school community enjoys the information that these publications provide, you may safely unsubscribe at anytime by clicking on the link called "SafeUnsubscribe" below in the footer.
