Featured Project: Red Pine Flooring

Pinus resinosa, commonly known as red pine or Norway pine, is native to North America. The wood is a little heavier and harder than white pine, close grain, hard and fairly strong. It is used for lumber, poles, piles, building construction and flooring. Here Paul Leone of River Village Carpenters, Inc. recently completed a project in West Newbury, MA. using red pine flooring. Paul Leone chose to use Feuer Lumber's 1x8 red pine flooring with a #2 grade tongue & groove.

Acclimating Pine Wood Floor on the Job Site

Acclimating a Pine floor allows time for the wood to adjust itself dimensionally, enabling the floor to reach a balancing point - a state in which it neither absorbs nor evaporates water vapor. This state is commonly referred to as its equilibrium moisture content, or EMC. The acclimation time period is generally between five to fourteen days for Pine flooring, depending upon humidity and/or job site conditions among rooms. It is recommended that the material be sorted and stacked in each room receiving flooring. Acclimating the material in this manner takes into consideration varying ambient conditions that may exist between rooms.

What is Rough Cut Lumber Used For?

Rough cut lumber has been cut and sold as-is, rather than run through a surfacing tool and "dressed." Rough-cut lumber, because it is not processed, is close in size to its nominal dimensions, while dressed lumber will be about a 1/2 inch smaller in width and depth than its nominal dimensions. Since it is not processed as much, rough-sawn lumber is generally sold cheaper than dressed lumber.

Rustic Projects
Floors and beams can be constructed using rough cut lumber, especially if you are aiming for a rustic look. Camps, Barns, workshops and sheds are frequently constructed or accented with exposed beams and wide-plank floors.

Exterior Projects
Siding, outbuildings, decks and exterior stairs are commonly constructed with rough lumber. As well as docks, fencing and raised beds for gardens.
