Winter Time Diving
Florida Springs
For those still wanting to make a dive during Florida's colder months, check out Florida's many freshwater springs. Most boast crystal clear waters and the water temperatures remain 72 degrees year round. Many springs are also the winter refuges of the West Indian Manatee. Check out this website for a list of Florida Springs and for more information on the manatee Manatee Viewing Center Helpful Holiday Hint: The Manatee Viewing Center, located in Apollo Beach, is a great place to take out-of-town guests. It's free, and there is usually lots of marine life that can be seen from the viewing center such as spotted eagle rays, snook, jacks and tarpon. Remember to bring polarized sunglasses!
Keeping Warm
A key to enjoying the colder diving months is keeping warm not only during the dive but after the dive as well. Most of your body heat is lost through your head, so the addition of a hood or hooded vest during the dive and a stocking hat for the surface interval can help slow the loss of body heat. A windbreaker type jacket is also helpful. The windbreaker can be worn over your wetsuit during surface intervals and over your warm, dry clothes for the boat ride home.Staying Safe
Florida weather can change quickly. This time of year, a mild sunny day can quickly become windy and rain chilled in just a few hours. So before heading offshore, be sure to check the local weather forecast, let someone know your float plan, and make sure you have proper safety equipment on board.
