For more than 20 years, Environmental Health Coalition and our allies have diligently pursued cleanup of some of the most toxic sediments in San Diego Bay. Although many toxic sites have been addressed, the toxic sediments in the NASSCO and BAE (formerly Southwest Marine) leaseholds have remained, poisoning the Bay for decades.
The polluters of these sites have fought cleanup for many years. The good news is that the Regional Water Quality Control Board has finally scheduled a hearing to consider a cleanup order for these sediments. The bad news is that the hearings will all occur in Kearny Mesa far away from the impacted communities.
EHC and our partner, San Diego Coastkeeper, will represent community interests formally at the hearings. There also is an opportunity for the general public to communicate with the Board by letter before October 18 and at the hearing on November 9.
TAKE ACTION TODAY! SEND AN EMAIL OR LETTER
by October 18 to Chairman Grant Destache and Boardmembers. Please tell them:
- You want a clean San Diego Bay that is safe for fishing and swimming
- You support a full cleanup of contaminated bay sediments
- The Board should require monitoring after the cleanup to ensure that the pollution has been removed
- The Board should hold the public meeting on November 9 in a location easily accessible by the public.
