Going Solar in Barrio Logan

Workers from  GRID Alternatives, a non-profit solar provider located in Barrio Logan, install solar panels on the home at 2121 Newton Ave. District 8 Councilmember David Alvarez lived in this home as a child, and EHC has a deep history here as well. The home sits next to the now-closed Master Plating chrome plater that EHC and residents battled for years before the County forced it to end operations.

Alvarez has set a goal to install solar systems on 50 homes within a calendar year. GRID Alternatives receives funding  from the City of San Diego to install these solar panels on low-income homes.  They train and lead teams of community volunteers and job trainees and work with community partners like EHC, Urban Corps, Rebuilding Together, MAAC Project, Milholland Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric.

Energy upgrades for San Diego homeowners

A citywide program is under way to make the homes of 2,000 low-income residents more energy-efficient over the next year.

Eligible homeowners will receive improvements for free in the San Diego Home Energy Upgrade program, which aims to reduce energy expenses by 15 to 20 percent.

The program "helps residents lower their energy costs, it improves the homes in our communities and it creates jobs for San Diegans," Mayor Jerry Sanders said.

The California Center for Sustainable Energy will administer and implement the program in coordination with the energy efficiency firms Heshong-Mahone Group and Richard Heath Associates, and the Environmental Health Coalition.
