Diane Takvorian named to San Diego

Union-Tribune Community Editorial BoardDiane Takvorian

On Sunday, San Diego Union-Tribune Editor and Vice President Jeff Light introduced the newspaper's newly formed Community Editorial Board, which Light called a "diverse group. . .committed to San Diego, to community service and to advancing a constructive conversation about the issues of the day."

EHC Executive Director Diane Takvorian was selected to join the board, whose role will be to inform and enhance the paper's editorial coverage and bring diverse perspectives to issues that affect the San Diego/Tijuana region.

"I'm honored to be among such a diverse group of community leaders," Takvorian said. "I applaud the Union-Tribune's bold move to break with their conservative and insular past and look forward to the opportunity to shine a light on issues that directly affect families in our communities. Issues like green energy and jobs, affordable housing, and cleaner, healthier communities are critical to the sustainability of our entire region. My goal is to work with my colleagues to create an open and honest dialogue about these issues and ensure that the opinions that often are unheard have a public forum for discussion."

Students from the MAAC Project Vocational Training Center joined San Diego elected officials, Environment California and EHC on July 28 for the release of a new report on California's green jobs training programs.

Building a Clean Energy Workforce: Preparing Californians for New Opportunities in the State's Green Economy documents the nearly 300 green job training programs at over 130 institutions throughout the state with up to 15,000 students enrolled annually.

"The environment and the economy go hand in hand," said San Diego City Council President Tony Young. "We need to invest in our future by expanding the local green job sector and training a new generation of San Diego workers to fulfill our vision of a clean energy future."
