Meet the
Large Animal Advanced Imaging Team - MRI, CT & Nuclear Medicine
| |
Rich Larson is our Specialty Imaging Supervisor and has been with the VMTH for 13 years. Prior to moving to CA, he spent 10 years raising and training racing Quarter Horses.
Jason Peters, RVT has been a VMTH employee for 15 years, initially working in Radiation Oncology and now Diagnostic Imaging. Prior to moving to CA, he was a veterinary technician at Mississippi State University.
Jennifer Harrison joined the VMTH 10 years ago and has been our MRI technician since it was installed 6 years ago. Before joining us, she was a trainer/exhibitor on the AQHA show circuit and also an exercise rider at the racetrack.
Dr. Sarah Puchalski, DACVR began at UC Davis in 2001 as a diagnostic imaging resident and joined our faculty in 2005. As an active competitor on the Northern CA show circuit, Sarah brings a practical perspective to sport horse imaging, particularly the use of CT and MRI in lameness conditions.
Dr Mathieu Spriet, DACVR joined our faculty in 2007 after completing a diagnostic imaging residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Mathieu is particularly interested in MRI and nuclear scintigraphy and has published several articles on MRI positioning artifacts in horses.

Sue Dyson to Speak at Annual Heumphreus Lecture
| Don't miss this year's Heumphreus Memorial Lecture featuring Sue Dyson to be held at UC Davis on January 28, 2012.
Dr. Dyson's topics: "Is there a relationship between foot shape and lameness?" and "How to recognize low grade lameness."

Greetings! The crisp morning air is a sure sign that Fall has arrived and Winter is right around the corner! We are looking forward to catching up with many of you at AAEP this month and at the Heumphreus Lecture in January (see below for details). We hope you'll enjoy this newsletter highlighting our advanced imaging services, and thank you again for the great referral cases you've sent our way this Summer and Fall! Drs. Mary Beth Whitcomb, Betsy Vaughan, Sarah Puchalski and Mathieu Spriet |
Imaging Service Installs New CT Scanner!
|
Our new GE Lightspeed 16-slice CT scanner can obtain an imaging sequence in 15-30 seconds and a full study in less than 5 minutes. This dramatically reduces anesthesia time, whether horses are undergoing CT angiography to diagnose soft tissue injuries within the hoof capsule or to produce 3D reconstructions to optimize surgical planning for the repair of complicated fractures, as shown in the following images.
Our CT scanner was used to create a 3D model of this comminuted P2 fracture in a 7 year-old Thoroughbred cross mare. 3D reconstructions of CT images allowed the surgeons to view the fracture from all angles and best plan their surgical approach, ultimately resulting in a successful repair.

LA Diagnostic Imaging at AAEP
| |

For the latest in diagnostic imaging, don't miss the AAEP Imaging Session on Wednesday morning (11/22/11) in San Antonio. Several members of our diagnostic imaging group are scheduled to present on a diversity of topics including:
- Ultrasound of the skull and head structures - Dr. Betsy Vaughan
- Radiographic survey of elite show jumpers - Dr. Sarah Puchalski
- Ultrasound and clinical outcome in horses with severe large intestinal thickening - Dr. Beth Biscoe (LA Ultrasound Fellow 2009-11)
ALSO AT AAEP - Bone Fragility Syndrome & Imaging:
Mandy (Murray) Arens, DVM, MPVM, PhD will be presenting the results of her collaborative study with Drs. Puchalski & Whitcomb, et al. on the clinical and imaging findings in horses with Bone Fragility Syndrome (aka Silicate Associated Osteoporosis).
For more information on these images & Bone Fragility Syndrome in general, please visit Dr. Arens' webpage:

| Dr. Whitcomb & Dr. Puchalski named Associate Members of European Imaging College (ECVDI) |
Congratulations to Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb (Large Animal Ultrasound) and Dr. Sarah Puchalski (Large Animal Radiology) who were recently voted in as Associate Members of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI). Associate membership was recently offered to a select group of non-ECVDI diplomates to encourage the development of large animal oriented diagnostic imaging residency programs. Dr. Mathieu Spriet (LA Radiology Faculty) is already a boarded diplomate of ECVDI, the European equivalent of the American College of Veterinary Radiology.

UCD Shines at ACVR

Faculty, current and former radiology residents made a strong showing at the recent annual meeting of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in Albuquerque, NM.
Dr. Whitcomb presented techniques to produce 2D simulations of ultrasound exams using custom animation features in Power Point. Dr. Alex Young (Resident II) described MRI and radiographic findings in horses with osseous resportion at the impar ligament attachment onto P3. Dr. Derek Cissell (Resident 2007-11) presented CT and radiographic findings in horses with sinonasal neoplasia and his investigation into ideal limb positioning for MRI of the equine distal limb. Kudos to Dr. Mathieu Spriet (UCD faculty radiologist) who mentored both Dr. Young and Dr. Cissell in these projects.
