North Jutland - Land of Light
The top of Denmark, North Jutland, is surrounded by sea - the Skagerrak to the west, the Kattegat to the east and the Limfjord to the south. This makes the light in this part of the country very special and the reason why so many artists have found inspiration here.
The region's main city is Aalborg, Denmark's 4th largest city. Aalborg is famous for its thriving nightlife with a wide selection of bars, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs however it is also home to a selection of excellent museums, craft workshops and galleries. A great destination by day and by night!
The journey by car northwards along the western coastline presents a number of delightful villages and beaches to explore before entering a landscape of heather-covered hills and forests and windswept sand dunes. Here, on the little branch of exposed land with the Skagerrak on one side and the Kattegat on the other, you will also find the picturesque and popular holiday town of Skagen with its yellow-painted houses and unique atmosphere. Its bustling harbour is a popular destination for private yachts, particularly from Norway, and houses a selection of good quality fish and seafood restaurants in addition to a rather good little shopping centre.
Local attractions include Den Tilsandede Kirke, the 'buried church'; Råbjerg Mile, the largest sand dune in the country and Grenen, the northernmost tip of Denmark where you can either walk or take the Sandormen, a tractor-drawn bus, along the beach to the tip to experience the meeting of the waves. |
