Summer Greetings,
Since we started to email our newsletter back in January, we have attempted to shape each one around our programs and services: foreclosure, preservation, credit repair, etc. This month we offer the model of "livability" as we continue to foster the unique characteristics of our neighborhoods.
Livability is the quality of life in your local community. According to the Department of Transportation's principles of livability, a fundamental goal of a livable city includes investing in healthy, safe and walkable neighborhoods. Our small and diverse city provides access to many local colleges and universities, entertainment, and the arts. Neighborhood Housing Service of New Haven is actively engaged in promoting livability in New Haven by providing affordable and energy efficient housing. We strive to build strong communities by organizing neighborhood revitalization, increasing affordability, and improving the overall quality of life through a variety of programs. NHS often works with New Haven's Livable City Initiative planting trees, cleaning up streets, and promoting sustainability in New Haven. Livable City Initiative is a neighborhood-focused agency whose primary mission is to enhance the experience of the individuals who live and work in the City of New Haven. The City of New Haven, the state government, and local nonprofit organizations, including NHS, are actively involved in improving the overall lives for residents.

NHS Featured in The New York Times

NHS has been buzzing with activity--and the press is taking note! Just a few weeks ago, both the New Haven Independent and the New Haven Register published articles about our open house at 653 and 678 Winchester. Now, The New York Times has also picked up on NHS' work in New Haven! The article, written by Lisa Prevost, focuses on NHS' cluster approach and appeared in print in the Real Estate section of the paper on Sunday, August 7. |

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation

Jim Paley is all smiles on this sunny summer day! Michael Bruno, Senior VP; Nuno Dos Santos, VP; and Marisol Vazquez, Senior VP presented Jim with a $15,000 check for the Foundation's 2011 support of NHS of New Haven's programs. As dedicated advocates of community development, they are also proud that NHS of New Haven and Bank of America have been partners for more than three decades. Jim acknowledged that much of the work NHS does would not be possible without Bank of America's long-time and continued financial support.

Yale Building Project
The 2011 Yale Building Project is underway! A collaboration among NHS, the City of New Haven, and the Yale School of Architecture the project gives first-year graduate students from the School of Architecture the opportunity both to design and construct an entire house. The design for this year's project, at 456 Orchard Street, was chosen from among six submissions, and construction is now in full swing! The house will be equipped with cost-effective, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and distinctive design features, such as rain-sensitive skylights! Feel free to drive by to check out the house! |

Peace, Love, and NHS
At the end of May, 50 high school seniors from Hopkins School in New Haven traded textbooks for work gloves and spent a day volunteering with NHS. One group of students cleaned a vacant, overgrown lot a few doors down from the Lab, while another group helped reorganize our garage of recycled materials. A third group painted plywood boards outside soon-to-be-rehabbed houses. With creativity and enthusiasm, these students helped beautify the Beaver Hills neighborhood. Thank you, Hopkins seniors, for your dedication to the community! |
