Along with all this snow and cold temperatures, February ushers in our next monthly theme, Credit Awareness, as well as our usual array of homeownership classes, and volunteer opportunities at NHS. We look forward to your participation and we welcome the chance to warm your spirits!

We are especially excited about continuing our mission of creating stable neighborhoods, this time in Newhallville, where we have eliminated blight by renovating abandoned or foreclosed properties. At present we are offering three fully renovated and energy-efficient houses on Winchester Avenue for sale at below market rates. We also have three Winchester homes currently in development. NHS has designated February as Credit Wise month, so if you or anyone you know needs some help starting a savings plan, please register for our class that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Call Norma at 203-777-6925 to sign up now.

In the meantime, we'd like to share with you some energy conservation tips that will ultimately lower your monthly household costs and start you on your way to being a wise homeowner:

Set the thermostat as low as comfort permits. For instance, each degree above 68 F can add 3% to the amount of energy needed for heating. Use your judgment. Babies and the elderly may need higher room temperatures.
On sunny winter days, open your insulated drapes or shades to get the full benefit of sun shining through the windows.
During the winter months, close your curtains or drapes at night to cut down on heat loss.
