At KMAC & Associates, we believe in lifelong learning, that when you stop learning, you die.  Based on that, we design workshops to meet the needs of nonprofit professionals and volunteer leaders at various stages of growth and experience.  Share your needs and help us plan the 2012-13 Nonprofit Workshop Series by completing this survey no later than August 6. It will take you less than 5 minutes to answer the three questions.

Greetings!

"If you change the way you look at things,

the things you look at change."

~ Wayne Dyer, Motivational Speaker & Author

Over the last couple of months, we've been undergoing some remodeling at  our 30-year-old home. Over the course of time, we have added things and we have changed things, but this was a little more than that. This required packing all of our 'stuff' to put into storage. Once the remodel was complete, and I was unpacking, some of my 'worldly' possessions went right back where I originally had them - where they continue to fit and serve well. I also found new roles for many of my once-favorite items that had been neglected and become a little underutilized. A smile creeps onto our lips as we reacquaint ourselves with these old friends.

The same holds true for the treasures buried in your cache of supporters. Instead of sending out a blanket, desperate plea, look internally. Start with where you are - NOW. Examine your database of supporters. Do you have 'lapsed' donors? Do you know why their support has fallen by the wayside? Don't just stop with financial supporters. What about program volunteers and board members? They care about your mission. Do you know why they care?

And, don't forget your 'steady' donors, those dependable friends, who not only care about your mission, but who share your core values and vision. When you look at them with a fresh set of eyes you may see patterns of support. This knowledge will help you find new ways to build and strengthen those relationships.

For example, consider starting with those who have given consistent support, not just contingent on attending an event, economic fluctuation or a whim. That's one starting point from which to build a strong foundation of support.

In this newsletter, we introduce you to Chris Carmona, a CPA who's sharing his passion for the nonprofit community, particularly through his involvement with Guide Dogs of Texas. He shares with us some of the ways he recruits new supporters to the nonprofit organizations he's involved in; like us, he's a believer in the power of cultivating strong relationships.

"Cultivating existing relationships - relationship retention - is as important as recruiting and creating new relationships."

A founding partner at the CPA firm Schriver, Carmona, Carrera P.L.L.C., Chris Carmona had been searching for a way to give back to the community. He knew he wanted to put his talents to work for a nonprofit organization; he wanted to get working at the committee level, and then move into a board leadership position. One day, at a child's birthday party, things started falling in place. His wife Ana had reconnected with Steve Cardenas, a grade school and high school classmate of hers. Years later, they become even better friends through their children. As Chris and Steve started talking at the birthday party, and Chris learned about Steve's connection with Guide Dogs of Texas, it all gelled.

"I attended a mission tour at Guide Dogs," Chris recalled. "I met a few board members and heard a client testimonial, and ...read more

Intuitively, we know that it's easier to widen our circles of influence if we start with the people we know. The tactics and strategies Chris Carmona and other successful volunteer leaders use to grow their base of supporters just make sense.

Consider this: no one is comfortable making cold calls. It's impersonal. It's awkward. You never know if the person on the other line will hang up on you, string you along, or just say 'no' before you've even asked your question. Why would it be any different when trying to recruit new supporters? It's much easier calling a friend, someone you know, someone who understands your point of view. Organizations that do this, that reach into their existing circle of influence, are very successful, because they're operating from a position of strength.

Are you new to the job? Does your organization have a new Executive Director, or a new Board Chair? If so, these are great opportunities to invite select supporters to meet the new leadership, hear what's been happening in the organization, and get a sense of the leadership's vision for the future - a future made possible by their participation.

You don't have to do this alone. In this newsletter, we give you some additional strategies you can employ to start building that larger, stronger group who supports your mission. We hope you'll find them useful as you move forward, and if you have ways of reaching out to new supporters that you've found successful, we hope you'll share them with us as well.
